Narrative

Children of James Reeves and Hannah Hall:
  1. Sarah Ann Reeves, b. c1843
James was baptized 27 Jul 1817 at Launton, Oxfordshire.

FreeBMD records the marriage of James REEVES and Hannah HALL during 2q1841 in the Bicester registration District.

During 3q1842, the birth of James and Hannah's daughter Sarah Ann was registered in the Bicester Registration District with the surname of REEVE when her mother's maiden name recorded as Hall.

It is likely that the death of James's first wife Hannah's is that registered in Bicester Registration District during 1q1847 again with the surname REEVE. Hannah was 27 years old, so born c1820

James REEVES (widower) married Caroline SHEARS (widow) on 10 May 1848 at the Parish Church of St Paul, Oxford. The church marriage register confirms James' father as Richard REEVES and Caroline's father as John SHEARS. See Research Note 2.

Daughter Sarah, and a granddaughter, Mary A. Reeves (age 4) are listed with them in 1871.

The death of James REEVE was recorded during 4q1873 in the Bicester Registration District (age 56) and he was buried at Launton on 31 Dec 1873.

Research Notes

(1)   Initial research provided by TRP member Anne McDonald

(2)   It is unclear where the surname of Nelder for James's second wife is sourced from. It may be the name of her former husband but it is not mentioned in any of the sources thus far inspected.

The image at Ancestry (image 77 of 131) which includes physical page 146 and specifically item 292 of the Marriage Register of the Parish Church of St Paul, Oxford shows James REEVES (widower) was married to Caroline SHEARS (widow) on 10 May 1848. Caroline's father's names is given as John SHEARS, suggesting she re-married using her maiden name. The witnesses to the marriage appear to be W EDMONDS and Sarah WARD.

The Parish Church of St Paul was in the Headington Registration District at that time. FreeBMD includes the Marriage of a James REEVES during 2q1848 in the Headington Registration District (volume 16 page 108). This reference names six individuals, but does not pair the couples.
  • The three brides are Elizabeth BROOKS, Ann MONK and Caroline SHEARS.
  • The three grooms are John HEDGES, James REEVES and John STEVENS.
Conveniently, St Paul's was not a popular choice for marriages at this time. The Ancestry image mentioned above shows (page 146, item 291) the marriage of John HEDGES and Elizabeth BROOKS on 30 April 1848 and (page 147, item 293) the marriage of John STEVENS and Ann MONK on 5 June 1848. This confirms the pairings of the three couples identified by FreeBMD.
