In 1841, James was a child age 7 in the household of William and Mary Reeves in Chigwell, Essex.

In 1851, he was age 16, a Farmer's labourer, born in Chigwell, living in Chigwell with James and Mary Bradley.

In 1861, he was still in Chigwell with James and Mary Bradley, listed as son-in-law. This term was used at the time for step-son. Marriage records show that his mother Mary Reeves had married James Bradley in 1846.
