Essex Chronicle, 14 Feb 1845
MELANCHOLY OCCURRENCE. On Tuesday last an inquest was held before C. C. Lewis, Esq. at Leytonstone, on the body of William Reeves, a carter from Chigwell. Deceased was returning from London with a cart and two horses, and stopped at the Bell public-house to take up his wife and daughter, who were waiting there for him. He had just started, walking by the side of his horses, the wife and daughter riding in the cart, when, only a few rods from the Bell they met a chaise with lamps, which seemed to frighten the fore-horse. Immediately afterwards the wife missed her husband, and calling out for him aroused two or three persons from the Bell, who running found him in the road speechless and insensible. He was immediately removed to the Bell and attended by Mr. Mackenzie, but he died in half an hour. There was no external appearance of any injury; upon examining the body, however, it was found that several limbs on his left side were broken, and Mr. Mackenzie stated he had died from injuries to the internal organs of the chest. The horse, when frightened, no doubt knocked him down, and the near wheel of the cart then passed over him. — Verdict, "Accidental death."

William's death was registered in 2q 1845 in West Ham Union Registration District.
