Narrative

Little is known with certainty about John's early life. It is highly probable he is John, son of William Reeves and Mary, who was baptised at Sherfield English on 27 October 1799.

From the 1841, 1851 & 1861 census returns we know John's wife was Mary. It is possible  This is the John Reeves who married Mary ROSE on 01 Aug 1822 in Sherfield English, Hampshire. See Research Note 1 below.

Known children of John Reeves and Mary (nee ROSE) are
  1. John Reeves, bapt 8 February 1823
  2. Ann Reeves, bapt 12 September 1842   1824
  3. Thomas Reeves, bapt 26 February 1826
  4. William Reeves, bapt 24 February 1828
  5. Benjamin Reeves, bapt 7 March 1830
  6. Sarah Reeves, bapt 20 November 1831
  7. Charles Reeves, bapt 6 April 1834
  8. Matilda Reeves, bapt 1 May 1836
  9. Cornelius Reeves, bapt 17 September 1837
  10. George Henry Reeves, bapt 19 January 1840
  11. Mary Maria Reeves, bapt 17 May 1842
  12. Horace Walter Reeves, bapt 4 August 1844
The baptism of all their children occurred at the Parish Church of St Leonard in Sherfield English, Hampshire, but note the 1851 census records the births of Benjamin, George and Horace as having been boorn in the neighbouring village of Whiteparish, Wiltshire. Several of these Sherfield English baptisms are also found on the Hampshire Genealogical Society's Baptism Index, where it is noted that the family is "of Whiteparish" (Wiltshire).

The GRO Index to Births notes that the mother's maiden name for daughter Mary Maria and sons George Henry & Cornelius was ROSE. See Research Note 1 below.

John, Mary and seven children appear on the June 1841 census in the Sherfield English parish area of Hampshire. John is shown as 40 years old and a Game Keeper. He was born in county (Hampshire).

On the March 1851 census, John plus wife Mary and son Benjamin along with their five younger children are living in the parish of Sherfield English, Hampshire.   John is 51 years old and born in Sherfield English, Hampshire. He is described as a Farmer of 50 Acres employing 10 men.

By the 1861 census, John and Mary have moved to Nelson Road, Millbrook. Matilda, Cornelius and Mary Maria are living with their parents. John is now aged 62 and described as a Retired Farmer.

Neither John nor wife Mary have, thus far, been found on the 1871 census. Daughters Matilda (now Mrs Thomas Clark) and Mary (now widowed Mrs George Brown) are living next door to each other on Nelson Road, Milbrook. Son Cornelius has married and moved away to work in Portsea. FreeBMD has a possible death registration for John in 1864 in South Stoneham Registration District, which includes Millbrook. The more recent GRO Index to Deaths indicates this John was 64 years of age, making this a very strong match.

Research Notes

(1) The four youngest children were born after the start of the civil registration of births, marriages and deaths. The GRO Index to Births notes that the mother's maiden name for daughter Mary Maria and sons George Henry & Cornelius was ROSE. A birth registration for the youngest son Horace (aka Harris) has yet to be identified.
