Narrative

Cornelius Reeves is the ninth known child of John Reeves & Mary (nee ROSE). This birth was registered during the third quarter of 1837 in the Romsey and Mitchelmersh Registration District, when his mother's maiden name was noted as ROSE. He was baptised in September 1837 at the Parish Church of St Leonard, Sherfield English in Hampshire and the parish register notes his parents as John & Mary REEVES.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Cornelius appears in the household of his parents John and Mary Reeves in the parish of Sherfield English, Hampshire. He was three years old and was born in county (Hampshire). He was the second youngest of six children in his parent's household at that time.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Cornelius again appears in his parent's household in Sherfield English, Hampshire. He is now 12 years old and his place of birth is recorded as being Sherfield English. He is a Scholar.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Cornelius as part of his parent's family now living on Nelson Road in Millbrook, Hampshire. He is now 22 years old, unmarried and was born at Sherfield, Hampshire. He is working as a Ship Wright.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Cornelius REEVES and Mary Ann ANTENEY during the first quarter of 1862 in South Stoneham Registration District. The marriage register for the Parish Church of St Nicholas, Millbrook notes they were married during February 1862. The register also notes Cornelius's father was John REEVES and Mary Ann's father was George ANTENEY.
The known children of Cornelius REEVES and his wife Mary Ann (nee ANTENEY) are
  1. Matilda Eliza REEVES, b.reg. 2q1863, South Stoneham R.D.
  2. Rose Augusta REEVES, b.reg. 4q1864, South Stoneham R.D., d.reg. 1q1866, South Stoneham R.D.
  3. Clara Ann REEVES, b.reg. 3q1867, Southampton R.D.
  4. Henry Cornelius REEVES, b.reg. 1q1870, Southampton R.D.
  5. George William REEVES, b.reg. 1q1873, Portsea R.D.

On the 1871 census, Cornelius, his wife Mary Ann and their three surviving children have moved from the Southampton area and are now living at 45 Plymouth Street in Portsea, Hampshire. Cornelius is now 32 years old and again claims birth in Sherfield, Hampshire. He is working ss a Shipwright

At the time of the 1881 census, Cornelius and family are to be found at 39 Kilmiston Street in Portsea, Hampshire. His age is consistent with previous decades and his occupation is unchanged. His place of birth is recorded as Shedfield (sic), Hampshire. As well as his wife Mary Ann (age 46, born Shirley, Hampshire) the household includes all four of their surviving children; Elizabeth Matilda (sic) (17, Freemantle, HAM), Clara Ann (13, Southampton, HAM), Henry Cornelius (11, Southampton, HAM) and George William (8, Portsmouth, HAM).

On the 1891 census, Cornelius is agin to be found at at 39 Kilmiston Street in Portsea, Hampshire. He is now 52 years old and his occupation is recorded as being a Retired Shipwright, a Dockyard Pensioner. His place of birth is recorded as Sheffield (sic), Yorkshire (sic). His wife Mary Ann and their son George William, who is now 18 and has no occupation, complete the household.

Neither Cornelius nor Mary Ann have been identified on the 1901 census. See Research Note 1 below. It is likely that Cornelius's wife predeceased him; FreeBMD notes te death of a Mary Ann REEVES, age 63, during 1q1898 in Portsea Registration District.

There is a death registration for a Cornelius REEVES during the third quarter of 1899 in the Portsea Registration District. He was 62 years old, so born around 1837; a very good match to this individual.

Research Notes

(1) At the time of the 1901 census, their son George has moved away from the Portsea area and is to be found in the Guildford area of Surrey with his future mother-in-law and future wife.
