Narrative

John, the son of James Reeves and his wife Sarah (nee BIST) was baptised on 15 March 1812 at the Parish Church of St Michael, Lyndhurst in Hampshire.

On the 1851 census John and Elizabeth appear as a married couple. The pairing of a John Reeves with an Elizabeth is not unique in southern Hampshire at this time.     It is most probable that she is Elizabeth CLARK who married John Reeves on 31 July 1837 at the Parish Church of St Mary, Portsea in Hampshire. This is based on three clues...
  • On the 1841 census a Mary CLARK (age 15) is living in the same household as John & Elizabeth.
  • Son George has a second forename of Clark/Clarke (FreeBMD Birth Registration / FamilySearch Baptism).
  • On the 1871 census, a nephew William G CLARK (aged 12 born Woolston) is present. On the 1861 census a George William CLARKE (sic) (age 2, born Woolston) appears in the household of George and Susannah Clarke. Head of house George is 32 years of age and born Gosport, Hampshire; the same place as Elizabeth.
A copy of the birth certificate of one of John & Elizabeth's children would confirm this hypothesis.

The currently known children of John and Elizabeth are ....
  1. Elizabeth Reeves, born c 1839 at Bitterne
  2. John Charles Reeves, born Bitterne, bapt June 1841 at Woolston
  3. George Clark Reeves, born Nursling, bapt July 1848
  4. Olive Reeves, born Redbridge, bapt August 1850
  5. Emma Reeves, born Redbridge, bapt July 1853
The baptisms of the three youngest children took place at the Parish Church of St Nicholas, Millbrook, Hampshire.
Possible child of John and Elizabeth is ....
  1. Jane Reeves, bapt October 1842 at Woolston
On the 1841 census, John and Elizabeth are living in the tything of Bitterne, part of the parish of South Stoneham. The household additionally comprises Elizabeth (age 3), John (3 weeks) and Mary CLARK (age 15, occupation Female Servant). John is shown as 25 years old and working as a Shoe Maker.

By the time of the 1851 census, John with his wife Elizabeth along with their five children are living together in the Redbridge area of Millbrook. Additionally a visitor, Ellen HAWKINS (age 8, a Scholar born Nursling) and Mary CROUCH, a servant complete the household. John gives his age as 39, born Lyndhurst Hampshire and his occupation is "Grocer & Baker (Master) employing 1 man". Eldest daughter Elizabeth is listed as the final member of the household, following both visitor and servant. She is similarly treated on the 1861 census. Is John trying to tell us something?

A decade later and the 1861 census shows John and Elizabeth again with all five of their children now living at the Post Office. John is now 49 years old and described as "Baker, Grocer and Sub Post Master employing 2 men". The location within the Parsih of Millbrook isn't immediately clear from the enumeration page, but a nearby property is the "Ship Inn" which still exists on what is now described as the Old Redbridge Road, Redbridge and would have been back then the main road through Redbridge. See Google Maps

At the time of the 1871 census John and Elizabeth are still resident in Redbridge. Three daughter, Elizabeth (32) Olive (20) and Emma (17) are living with their parents along with 12 year old Scholar William G CLARK who is described as a Nephew and one female servant. John is now aged 59 and described as "Baker & Grocer, Post Master employing 1 man and 1 boy".

John's brother Samuel was also living in Redbridge as shown by 1851, 1861 & 1871 census returns.

On the 1881 census, John and Elizabeth plus daughters Elizabeth (42) and Olive (30) plus grandson George B Reeves are still living at the Post Office in Redbridge. Grandson George is the child of John & Elizabeth's son John C Reeves and his wife Mary (nee RANSOM). and and is described as a Baker and Grocer.

Neither John nor his wife Elizabeth have yet been identified on the 1891 census. The Post Office in Redbridge is now occupied by Harry James FOOT along with his wife Olive (nee Reeves, John and Elizabeth's daughter) and their five children.

FreeBMD has a probable Death Registration during the December quarter of 1883 in the adjacent New Forest Registration District, for an individual named John aged 71.
