On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, John is head of household on Silver Street, (Abridge), Lambourne, Essex. His age is noted as 30 and he is an Agricultural Labourer. In addition to John, the household includes Sarah (29), George (11), William (6) and Eliza (6). All were born in county (that is to say in Essex).
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, John and his wife Sarah are living in Abridge, Essex. His age seems to be recorded as 46 (or perhaps 41, which would be more consistent with other census returns), he is working as an Agricultural Labourer and claims birth in Lambourne, Essex. Their children William (17), Eliza (15), Catherine (9), John (6) and James (1) complete the household. The next schedule is for the household of Joseph Reeves.
A decade later and the 1861 census shows John and his wife Sarah are still living in Lambourne, Essex. The family are enumerated under the surname REEVE (sic) (schedule 192). John's age is shown as 50, again his occupation is Agricultural Labourer and his place of birth Lambourne, Essex. Their children John (15), James (11) and Ann (8) complete the schedule (schedule 192). Living in the same dwelling but listed separately on schedule 193 is Susannah JUDD, a widowed Lodger, age 73. It is suspected this might be John's mother-in-law. She is followed by (schedule 194 and again in the same dwelling) Walter BURRELLS and his wife Caroline. See Research Note 1 below.
On the 1871 census, John is first listed on the schedule (58), but rather than being described as Head, he is shown as Widower and the next (Condition) column shows him as Married. he is 60 yeras old and working as an Agricultural Labourer. His place of birth is given as Lambourne, Essex. John's wife Sarah has not been identified within this census and it is possible hers is the death noted as Sarah REEVE (sic) by FreeBMD during the second quarter of 1863, age 52, in the Ongar Registration District. The household additionally comprises son James (20, unmarried), son John (24, married), daughter-in-law Eliza (21, married) and daughter (sic) Emma FLACK (4).
John has not been identified on the 1881 census. It is highly likely John's death is that noted by FreeBMD as John REEVE (sic), age 60 during the fourth quarter of 1871 in the Ongar Registration District.
Research Notes
(1) FreeBMD notes the marriage of Walter BURRELLS and Caroline REEVES during the first quarter of 1861 in the Ongar Registration District. It is strongly suspected that Caroline BURRELLS (nee Reeves) and our subject John's daughter Catherine Reeves are the same person. This is probably the son of Edward Reeves.
