Narrative

Child of Jonathan Reeve and Hannah Wilson Budd:

1. Amariah Reeves (Azeriah?), b. 27 Jul 1738

According to Stevens & Birch, this Jonathan was a son of William and grandson of Walter Reeve.

The marriage record states that both Jonathan and Hannah were of Burlington County.

Hannah was a widow of John Budd. In 1760, Jonathan sold his right in the Budd estate lands to Hannah's sons John and Samuel Budd. It states Jonathan was "now of the County of Salem." The 1785 will of her brother John Budd mentions "John Reeves, who is the son of my half brother, Azeriah Reeves." Stevens & Birch takes this to be a reference to Amariah Reeves who married Susanna Hays on 4 Oct 1762 in Salem County, New Jersey. In addition, it's possible theorized that this is the same as person as Ameriah Reeves who migrated down to North Carolina and Virginia.

He kept store in Woodbury from 1770 to the time of his death. His nephew, Alexander Bennett lived with or worked for him when he kept store, as is shown by the diary of Samuel Mickel. Alexander was the son of his sister, Mary (Reeves) Bennett. Hannah had two sons, John Budd and Samuel Budd, at the time of her marriage to Jonathan Reeves. On May 3, 1760, Jonathan releases his right of dower in the 500 acre plantation of his wife's former husband, John Budd. to her sons John and Samuel Budd. John Budd, Jr., gives receipt. Hannah was buried March 29, 1772, at Mt. Holly.

Research Notes

It is also noteworthy that John Reeves, son of Azeriah Reeves, married Mrs. Rebecca Gaskill Huber in 1770 which would require that he was born by at least 1750 but even that would make him very young when marrying Rebecca. Also Amariah's date of birth in 1738 would not allow for a child old enough to marry in 1770.

It is unclear whether the name of Jonathan's son was Amariah or Azeriah but they do not appear to be the same person. Research of the historical records of Burlington County, New Jersey contain numerous connections between the Budd and Gaskill families.
