In an 1848 Deed, he sold his share of his father's land to Thomas. It stated that their mother was formerly Mary Gill, and after Joseph's decease had married John B. Jessup. Thomas was of Upper Penns Neck in Salem County and Joseph was of Greenwich in Gloucester.

Joseph is described as of Greenwich in Gloucester in the deed. In 1850, he was living there as a head of household. The Restore Carter family was living with him along with several laborers.

The marriage record states Joseph was the son of Joseph and Mary Reeves and Rebecca was the daughter of James and Abigail Jessup.

He is listed under Greenwich, Gloucester County in the 1863 Civil War Draft Registration, age 38.

REEVES - On December 5, REBECCA B., wife of Joseph L. Reeves, aged fifty-three years.
The relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from the residence of her husband, Clarksboro, N. J., this Thursday, the 9th inst. at 2 o'clock. Train leaves Market street ferry at 1.30.
