Narrative

There is very little available information regarding Joshua Reeve beyond his marriage to Providence Baker in 1796. He appears to have left Wilkes County very soon after his marriage, possibly along with several of his siblings.

He may be the same individual who is listed on the 1795 tax lists of Wilkes County as "Joseph Reeves" since there is no other record of Joseph.

Joshua Reaves and his brother Isaac Reaves, Jr. are listed on the 1799 tax lists of Madison County, Kentucky. Joshua is also in tax records of Madison County, Kentucky again in 1800 but Isaac Reaves, Jr. is not. Joshua continues to be listed in all subsequent tax listings from 1800 through 1803. There were no other Reeves' families living in Madison County at that time, but there is a marriage recorded there in 1798 for a Sarah Reeves to William Holton with James Reeve(s) as the bondsman. It is likely this is the brother of Joshua and the same James Reeves, son of Isaac Reeves, Sr. of Wilkes County, who was listed in both 1796 and 1797 on the Madison County KY tax lists and later found in Mason County, Kentucky by 1800.

From the History of Knox and Daviess Counties, Indiana:

• The following is a list of the heads of families that assembled in each of the first five forts named:...Coleman's Fort — Joshua Reeves, Henry Edwards, Samuel Comer, John Smith, a Mr. Perry, Alexander Hays, J. Waters, J. Freeland, Amos Rogers, Simon Nicholas. Abraham Rodarmel and Robert Hays. p.573
• The name of the first settler in this township (Reeve) is perpetuated in its name. He was Joshua Reeve, from South (sic) Carolina, who came to this part of Daviess County in 1807. He was an enterprising and active pioneer, as is shown by his having blazed a trace from his home in this township to Vincennes...The first land entry was made by Joshua Reeve. April 13, 1812, and consisted of the north fraction of Section 23, Township 1, Range 5. p.594

Coleman's Fort was erected in 1812 as were 4 other forts in that area of Indiana as a protection from Indian attacks. Joshua Reeve was apparently one of the original inhabitants of that fort.

Joshua Reeve of Daviess County appears to have died before 1840, for in the census of that year, Providence Reeves is listed as the head of a household in neighboring Martin County, Indiana. Providence Reeves' household consists of the following individuals - 1 male ‹5, 1 male 15-19, 1 female ‹5, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 20-29 and 1 female 40-49. If this is Providence Baker Reeves, her age appears to be incorrectly estimated as about ten years younger than her actual age. From the ages of the members of the household, it appears that a widowed daughter with her children is also living in the home.

The following Reeves' individuals married in Daviess and Martin Counties of Indiana and are likely the children of Joshua and Providence Baker Reeve:

In the 1840 census of Martin County, Indiana, Jasper Hineman is living one residence from Providence Reeves.
