Joshua was one of the administrators of his father's estate along with his sister-in-law Ruth. He is named his his father's will. In an 1816 deed, he and his wife Rachel sold land he had inherited from his father's will.

Joshua made his will in 1836. It was proved in 1838. The following were named:
  • wife Rachel Reeves (mentions headstone for previous deceased wife)
  • son William G. Reeves
  • son Thomas Reeves
  • daughter Elizabeth Johnston
  • Catherine Forbes
  • Harriet Hurted
  • Maria Harris

There is a deed from 1787 in which a Joshua and his wife Catherine sold some land in Cumberland County. This appears to be Joshua and his first wife. His will shows that Rachel was his second wife.

New York Evening Post, 17 Jul 1838
Bridgetown N J June 29, Joshua Reeves, Continental Soldier of Jersey line, 81ys He was 3 years in service and though at Trenton, Princeton, Monmouth, Brandywine, etc. never lost a day by wounds or sickness.
(Note: He actually died at Bridgeton, not Bridgetown.)

Joshua gave testimony for his pension in 1829 and stated he was seventy one years and upwards and a resident of Cumberland County. The pension file says he died 29 or 30 Jun 1838 on his farm about 1 mile from Bridgeton. In 1890, Thomas P. Reeves, aged seventy years, submitted a letter to the file stating he lived at 54 Indiana Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana and referred to Joshua as his grandfather.

Research Notes

Note that there were two Joshua Reeve(s) in Cumberland County who were both Revolutionary War veterans. The other Joshua later lived in New York and was still living in 1844 so is distinguishable from this one.
