Narrative

Mary Ann Reeves is the eldest second of thirteen known children of Samuel Reeves and his wife Matilda. See Research Note 1 below.

She was baptised on 4 April 1875 as indicated by an Extracted IGI Entry

She appears on the 1881 census with her parents in the household of her grandfather Samuel Reeves at 21 Longcroft Street, Southampton.

Mary Ann is not in her parent's household on the 1891 census and she has not been positively identified elsewhere. It is felt highly likely she is the Mary A Reeves who appears as a servant in the household of Richard and Mary SNOOK at 121 St Mary Street, Southampton but proof is lacking.

Mary Ann REEVES married Albert Edward TANNER during the third quarter of 1897 in Southampton Registration District.
The known children of Albert Edward Tanner and Mary Ann (nee Reeves) are
  1. Elizabeth Fanny Tanner, b.reg. 1897 - d.reg. 1897
  2. Alfred Ernest Samuel Tanner, b.reg. 1899 - d.reg. 1899
  3. Ernest Tanner, b.reg. 1900 - d.reg. 1900
  4. Elizabeth Blanche Tanner, b.reg. 1901, m.reg. 1933 Frederick George LAWRENCE
  5. Ethel Maud Mary Tanner, b.reg 1902
  6. Albert Ernest Edward Tanner, b.reg.1904
  7. Frederick George Samuel Tanner, b.reg.1906 - d.reg. 1906
  8. Frederick Samuel Tanner, b.reg. 1901 - d.reg. 1910
  9. Ellen Elsie Tanner, b.reg. 1912 - d.reg. 1912
The 1911 census indicates that son Albert was born in Bournemouth, Hampshire and both surviving daughters in Southampton, Hampshire. GRO Birth Registration entries for these children confirms this.

By the time of the 1901 census Albert E Tanner and his wife Mary A Tanner are living at 6 Marchwood Road, Millbrook in the first of two households at this address. There are no other members of their household.

On the 1911 census, Albert Edward and Mary Ann Tanner are living at 46 Empress Road, Bevois Valley, Southampton along with their children Albert Ernest Edward (age 6), Elizabeth Blanche (9) and Ethel Maud Mary (8). They have been married 13 years and Mary indicates she has had eight children born alive to the present marriage, of whom only three are still living and that five have died. Two lodgers, Annie Francis RIDDETT and Lillian Rose RIDDETT complete the household. See Research Note 2 below.

On the 1939 Register, Mary's husband Albert E Tanner appears in the household of his daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth B and Frederick G LAWRENCE at 50 New Road, Southampton. He is a widower. It is likely that the death of Mary Ann Tanner is that noted by FreeBMD occurring in Southampton Registration District during the second quarter of 1925. She was 50 years old.

Research Notes

(1) Oral family tradition, confirmed by the release of the 1911 census in 2012, indicated that Samuel and Matilda had thirteen children. However, prior to November 2016 the identities of only twelve children were known to family researchers. It transpires the missing child, now known to be Ellen Matilda Reeves, was their eldest. This has necessitated the renumbering their remaining 12 children.

(2)   A family connection to lodgers Annie Francis RIDDETT and Lillian Rose RIDDETT has not been investigated. However the surname RIDDETT does feature in this Reeves family in earlier generations.
