Narrative

Samuel is the fourth known child of Charles Reeves and Elizabeth (mnu). He was baptised at the Parish Church of St Mary in Southampton in September 1824. His father died in early 1826, when Samuel was less than 2 years old.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Samuel appears in his mother's household on King Street in the parish of St Mary, Southampton. He is noted as being 15 years old and claims birth in county (that is in Hampshire). He is working as a labourer.

Samuel married Mary Harrison in September 1845 in the Parish Church of St Mary, Southampton, at which time they both lived on Grove Street. Their marriage certificate show Samuel was of "full age", Mary was a minor. Samuel's occupation is again a labourer. Samuel and Mary had six known children and lived for many years on Longcroft Street, in the parish of St Mary, Southampton.

Known children of Samuel & Mary
  1. Reeves, Edward William, b.reg. 1850, Southampton
  2. Reeves, Mary Ann, b.reg. 1851, Southampton
  3. Reeves, Samuel, b.reg. 1854, Southampton
  4. Reeves, Rosina, b.reg. 1859, Southampton
  5. Reeves, George H, b.reg. 1864, Southampton (See Research Note 1 below.)
  6. Reeves, Ellen Maude known as Nellie, b.reg. 1867 Southampton
All of the above were baptised at the Parish Church of St Mary, except Rosina who was baptised at nearby Holy Trinity Church on North Front, Kingsland.

At the time of the 1851 census on 30 March, Samuel with his wife Mary and their eldest son Edward were living at 2 Longcroft Street. Samuel claims he was 26 years old and that he was born in Southampton. His occupation seems to read "Coal Runner", but might also be read as "Coal Burner"; the town gas works were near by and we know from his death certificate that he was employed there as as stoker. Edward Reeves (age 19) is living as a lodger with Samuel and Mary.

When son Samuel was baptised in 1854, the family were living on nearby North Front, Southampton.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Samuel along with Mary and their four eldest children living at 11 Marine Parade, Southampton. Samuel is now 35 years old and working as a stoker.

On the 1871 census, Samuel and wife Mary along with sons Samuel & George H plus daughter Nellie are living at 21 Longcroft Street, Southampton. He now claims he is 47 years old and he is still working as a stoker. Edward Reeves is living a 22 Longcroft Street.

At the time of the 1881 census, Samuel and his wife Mary are still living at 21 Longcroft Street with their son George H and also their son Samuel along with his wife Matilda and their three daughters (Mary A, Fanny L & Blanche R), correctly listed as head of household Samuel's grand daughters. Edward Reeves is living a 23 Longcroft Street.

On the 1891 census, Samuel and his wife Mary are still living at 21 Longcroft Street. They are listed first in the enumeration, but their relationship (although indistinct) seems to be Head's father & mother, with their son Samuel listed third as head of household. Son Samuel's wife Matilda and six of their children complete the household. Samuel (the elder) is now 66 years old and his occupation is given as labourer.

Samuel's wife Mary dies in 1899, and by the time of the 1901 census a widowed Samuel is recorded as a member of his son Samuel's household at 14 Longcroft Street. Samuel is now 76 years old, still claiming birth in Southampton and it is noted he has "no occupation"

Samuel died in January 1902, aged 77 at 14 Longcroft Street. The informant was his daughter-in-law Matilda Reeves, the wife of his son Samuel.

Research Notes

(1) Son George Henry erroneously appears in the GRO Index under the surname REES. His mother's maiden name is correctly recorded as HARRISON. His baptism in November 1863 is recorded as REEVES.
