Montague John REEVES is the second known child of Robert Henry Reeves and his wife Agnes (nee COOMBES). His birth was registered in the fourth quarter of 1893 in the Highworth Registration District.At the time of the 1901 census, he appears as simply John Reeves in his parents home at Badbury Bottom, Badbury, Wiltshire. He is 7 years old and his place of birth is shown as Chisledon (sic Chiseldon), Wiltshire.
On the 1911 census, he is again living at home. He was initially recorded as M. John Reeves, his first given name Montague being subsequently added in a different handwriting. He is 17 years old, single and was born at Badbury, Wiltshire. He is working as a Labourer on (a) Farm.
Montague's death is recorded on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's website. As Private 23674 he was serving with 7th Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment in Greece and died in September 1916, aged 23. He was initially buried in the Janes Military Cemetery in Greece and in February 1921 his remains were re-interred in the nearby Sarigol Military Cemetery which is close to the town of Kristoni in the Central Macedonia region of Greece (GR-57). The CWGC additionally notes "Son of Robert Henry and Agnes Reeves, of Badbury, Wilts".
Montague's sacrifice, along with that of his younger brother William, is recorded on the Memorial Plaque in the Parish Church of The Holy Cross, Chiseldon, Wiltshire. See also Research Note 1.
