Richard Gatewood was mentioned in the 28 April 1728 will of his father-in-law Henry Reeves. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 4, pages 342–344.]

The division of the estate of Mr Henry Reeves decd was made on 19 May 1730, delivered to the severall legatees according to his will. Lists accounts for The Widdows thirds, Mrs Sarah Reeves, Mr John Reeves, Mr Samuel Reeves, Mr George Reeves, Mr Richard Gatewood, Mrs Eliz: Reeves, Mrs Ann Reeves. Also dated 13 June 1730. Patience Gatewood and her brother George Reeves placed a bond on 21 May 1745 for the administration of the estate of Richard Gatewood. Essex County VA Deed Book 23, pgs. 254-255

The ages of the daughters of Patience Reeves Gatewood have been estimated differently by various researchers but both Elizabeth and Sarah had guardians appointed for them after the deaths of their parents in 1745. This indicates that neither Elizabeth or Sarah would have been of an age considered full maturity when Patience Reeves Gatewood died in 1745. This may also indicate that daughter Patience was over 21 since no similar guardianship record has been located for her.
