Narrative

Phebe Reeves of Southampton, New York wrote her will on 2 Feb 1828 and it was proved on 12 Feb 1828. It's not clear from her will, but she was likely a singlewoman rather than widow. Job H. Halsey and Lavina Sanford were witnesses. She mentions the following in her will:
  • my niece Marian Halsey
  • my sister Lucretia Sanford
  • my two nieces Matsy S. Rogers and Harriet S. Cooper
  • Levi Howell and John H. Cooper Executors

Her headstone states: "In/Memory of/PHEBE REEVES/who departed/this life/Feb 10 1828/AE 74."

Research Notes

There was a Phebe McCullem who married a Stephen Reeves on 24 Oct 1781 according to New York State marriage licenses. Southampton Pres Church records mention a baptism for Betsey, daughter of Phebe Reeves on 20 Mar 1786. Perhaps this is that Phebe, widow of Stephen. However, it is unclear who this Stephen Reeves would be as other wives are known for both the eldest Stephen and the younger Stephen who moved to Palmyra. Further research is needed on this.
