Rebecca Reeves married John Hood, born c. 1759, Amelia Co., VA, d. 1827, Wilkes Co., GA. A family Bible record for Rebecca's son Joel Hood once existed that purportedly gave the birthdates for all of the children of Rebecca Reeves and John Hood. The names of the children are also established through John Hood's Wilkes Co., GA, will. Hood wrote the will in 1822; it was proven 2 July 1827 with Enoch Callaway and Tyre Reeves as executors. John Harper, Joseph Adams, and Bannister Harper witnessed the document. Hood named the following children: William; Joel; Ichabod; Stephen W.; Avery R.; two oldest daughters Nancy Crain and Patsy Crain; two younger daughters Lucy and Polly Hood.
Research Notes
Many researchers have confused this John Hood with other individuals. This has led to the incorrect name "John William Hood" or "John Williams Hood" appearing in a number of sources and on-line pedigrees. A further complication is the existence of another contemporary John Hood who lived in Columbia County; that John's wife has never been identified. John Hood of Columbia County was approximately the same age as John Hood of Wilkes County — probably, in fact, a bit older. That John seems to have had a daughter Nancy Hood (1785-1865) who married John C. McGee in 1814 in Columbia Co., GA. This has led to extreme confusion among on-line researchers, who have confused the two John Hoods and their families, often incorrectly attributing Nancy Hood (1785-1865) to John Hood and Rebecca Reeves. The relationship is all the more confusing because Nancy Hood McGee lived in Harris Co., GA, near Joel Hood, son of John and Rebecca Reeves, near the site of a town called Hood in honor of Joel Hood's family. In actuality, John Hood of Wilkes and John Hood of Columbia County seem to have been second cousins and descendants of the same Hood family of Surry County, Virginia.
