Narrative

Robert is the fifth known child of Mary (mnu) and Robert Reeves. He was baptised at the Parish Church of St Andrew, Heddington, Wiltshire in June 1813, which is consistent with census returns which place his birth at Heddington, Wiltshire in about 1813.

It is suspected that the marriage of Robert Reeves and Elizabeth (perhaps nee KIRTON) occurred during the fourth quarter of 1837. See Research Note 1 below.
The known children of Robert Reeves and his wife Elizabeth are
  1. Louisa Reeves, b.reg. 1840
  2. Eliza Reeves, born c1847
  3. George Reeves, b.reg. 1846
  4. Frank Reeves, born c1860
  5. Ann Jane Reeves, b.reg. 1862
On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Robert is shown as the head of household in Heddington, Wiltshire. He is 28 years old and was born in county (that is in Wiltshire). He is employed as an Agricultural Labourer. His wife Elizabeth and daughter Louisa complete the household. There are several other Reeves households in the same village at this time.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Robert and Elizabeth are living in the village of Heddington. Robert is shown as 36 years old and was born in Headington (sic Heddington) Wiltshire. He is working as an Agricultural Labourer. Their daughters Louisa (age 10) and Eliza (4) complete the household. At this tine there are four other households in Heddington headed by a Reeves.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Robert and Elizabeth are still living in Heddington. He is now shown as 48 years old and working as a Carter. The household additionally comprises daughter Eliza (aged 13), sons George (5) plus Frank (1) and Henry DUCK (8) who is a boarder.

On the 1871 census, Robert and Elizabeth are again to be found in Heddington. He is now recorded as 57 years old and working as an Agricultural Labourer. Sons George (15), Frank (11) and daughter Ann Jane (8) complete the household. Living close by (next but one schedule) is Henry Reeves (age 23) and his household. Henry was the son of Isaac Reeves; as yet no family connection has been established.

At the time of the 1881 census, Robert and Elizabeth remain in Heddington. He is this time recorded as being 68 years old and again working as an Agricultural Labourer. Sons George (24) and Frank (20) remain in the family home.

On the 1891 census, Robert and Elizabeth are again to be found in Heddington. Robert is first named and listed as head of household. He is now 77 years old with no occupation given. Against the same schedule number and listed third after Elizabeth is their son Frank who is also described as head of household with Frank's wife Emily and their young son Henry G Reeves (aged 10 months) living in the same dwelling.

Robert has not been identified on the 1901 census and it is likely his is the death recorded in the fourth quarter of 1897 in Calne Registration District. The age given is 79, less than might have been expected, but Robert's age was somewhat variable on the census returns.

Research Notes

(1) It is speculated that Robert's wife was Elizabeth KIRTON. Elizabeth and six others appear in the fourth quarter of 1837 in the Calne Registration District on page 449. Robert alone is listed in the same quarter and registration district with page reference 48. FreeBMD notes that page 48 is out of sequence for the Calne Registration District. The GRO certificate for this event has not been purchased. Are you able to confirm this from a copy you have, please?
