Stacy Reeves
Stacy Reeves, head of the well-known building firm of Stacy Reeves & Sons, and who was the third president of the Master Builders' Association, of Philadelphia, died at his residence, 5711 Thomas avenue, yesterday from paralysis, aged 74 years.
Mr. Reeves had a stroke of paralysis last summer and had not been active in business since. Mr. Reeves was born June 16, 1828, on his father's farm, near Mount Holly, Burlington county, N. J., where he spent his childhood. His father died when he was 8 years old and two years later his mother died. He was then sent to the home of a relative, where he remained until he was 15 years old. He worked on the farm during the summer, and attended the country school in the winter. After spending a year at the Friends school, at Westtown, he was apprenticed to Mark Balderston, a master carpenter, of Philadelphia, with whom he learned his trade. He became established in business for himself in 1851. He served in the Pennsylvania State Militia, 1862-63, and joined the Carpenters' Company and was elected to the secretaryship for a term of three years in 1889. He was a charter member of the Master Builders' Exchange of this city and one of the managers of the Franklin Institute. His son, Albert A., was taken into the firm in 1877 and Henry Reeves in 1885, under the firm name of Stacy Reeves & Sons. Under his supervision many of the large buildings were erected. His firm was recently awarded the contract to build the new laboratory buildings for the University of Pennsylvania.
