Probate documents in the case files of other children of Terrell Reeves who were deceased in the early days of the family's move to Kansas record that John and his sister Emeline were children by a second marriage. One document in particular stated that they were "half bloods" which is far more likely to mean that they were half siblings, rather than half native American.
In the 1865 Kansas State Census, John and Emeline along with all of the other unmarried children of Terrell Reeves are recorded in the household of newly married oldest brother Enoch Reeves.
By 1870, John and Emeline were living in the household of their brother Newton in Toronto, Woodson County. In that census they are noted as attending school.
After the 1872 marriage of Emeline and Jeremiah Cash Hawkins in Greenwood County, Kansas, they only remained there for a few years. By the birth of daughter Lela in 1881, they were recorded as residents of Wallowa County, Oregon.
It appears that Emeline and Jeremiah Hawkins divorced sometime before 1900. Jeremiah Hawkins lived until November of 1940 and in census listings gave his marital status as divorced.
