An 1816 deed for 33-3/4 acres in Guilford County on Mairs Fork of the Haw River from Thomas Reeves to Leven Covey describes Thomas Reeves as "of the State of North Carolina & County of Guilford". This indicates that as late as 1816, Thomas Reeves was still living in the same area of Guilford County on Mairs Fork which was probably the land willed to him by his grandfather Richard Burton in his 1799 will.

After Thomas sold the above mentioned property in Guilford County, he appears to have moved into adjoining Rockingham County where he is listed on the

This is very likely the Thomas Reeves who married Emily Ann Jeffreys in 1834 in Guilford County and reappeared there in the 1840 census is this same individual. The Thomas Reeves recorded on the 1840 census of Guilford County is listed as 40 to 49 years of age with a wife 20-29, 1 male child 5-9 and 2 female children under 5 years of age which would correspond with his 1834 marriage to Emily Ann Jefferies.

Research Notes

This individual needs much research. It has always been assumed that the Thomas Reeves found in Wilkes County, Georgia who married Bethania/Bethany Stinson was the son of Thomas Reeves and Elizabeth Burton of Guilford County, North Carolina; however, recently there is a great amount of information that makes that family connection questionable.

In the 1880 census, Hickerson Reeves and Thomas Reeves, sons of Thomas Reeves and Bethany Stinson, each give information that their father was born in Maryland. This confirms that he was a grandson of Bennett Reeves, son of Thomas Reeves and Mary Murphy of Charles County, Maryland, who migrated to Wilkes County, Georgia around 1800. Bennett F. Reeves, son of John D. Reeves of Wilkes County, Georgia and later of Stewart County, also indicates his father was born in Maryland in the 1880 census identifying him as another grandson of Bennett Reeves.

A Thomas Reeves of approximately the right age moved into Randolph County, North Carolina which adjoins Guilford around 1820 and is listed in the 1830 census there. Whether this is the same Thomas Reeves is unknown but the possibility needs to be explored. Further research reveals that the Thomas Reeves in Randolph County was 50-59 years of age in 1830 which would have been at least 10-20 years older than this Thomas Reeves.

The probate records of Wilkes County, Georgia need to be researched in depth to resolve all of the lingering questions regarding the Reeves in that county.
