Narrative

Nothing is presently known of the early life of this Thomas REEVES. 1851 & 1861 census returns point to his birth in Whitchurch, Oxfordshire in about 1799-1801.

From the 1841 census, the eldest probable child of Thomas is a son Henry Reeves, born about 1828 in Berkshire (based on proximity within the household, since 1841 has no explicit relationships recorded). A second son Alfred (born about 1830 in Reading Berkshire) appears on the 1851 census.

Based on the evidence from baptismal records, Thomas Reeves was married to Charlotte (nee MNU) sometime prior to 1833. See Research Note 1 below.
The known children of Thomas REEVES and Charlotte (mnu) are
  1. Stephen/Thomas Stephen REEVES, bapt 1833
  2. Priscilla REEVES, bapt 1835
Both the above baptisms were at the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, in Reading, Berkshire.

Thomas's wife Charlotte most probably died between 1835 & 1840, since during the second quarter of 1840, Thomas Reeves married Sarah INGLEFIELD. From Berkshire BMD, we know they married at the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Reading.
Known children of Thomas Reeves and Sarah (nee Inglefield) are
  1. Jane Reeves, b.reg. 1841
  2. William Reeves, b.reg. 1842
  3. Sophia Reeves, b.reg. 1846
  4. Ann Reeves, b.reg 1850
  5. James Reeves, b.reg. 1851 (See Research Note 2 below.)
  6. Jane Reeves, b.reg 1853
All the above births were registered were in the Reading Registration District, with Jane's in the St Mary, Reading Sub District and the others in the St Giles, Reading Sub District.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Thomas Reeves is living in the St Mary's Parish of Reading. His age is shown as 35 and he is a Labourer. The household comprises Sarah (age 20), Henry (13), Alfred (11), Stephen (8), Priscilla (5) and Jane (2 months). All of the family are recorded as having been born in county (that is to say in Berkshire).

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Thomas and Sarah Reeves are living at 2 Middle Court in the St Giles parish of Reading. Thomas is now 50 years old and claims birth in Whitchurch, Oxfordshire. His occupation is noted as "Labourer Tanner". In addition to his wife Sarah (30, born Woodley, Berks), the household comprises son Alfred (21, born Reading), son William (8), daughter Sophia (5), daughter Ann (1) and Mary THATCHARD, a servant (14). The Place of Birth column is blank for William, Ann & Mary.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Thomas and Sarah living at Manor Court in the St Giles parish of Reading. Thomas is now recorded as 62 years old and again claims birth in Whitchurch, Oxfordshire. He is working as a Labourer. His wife Sarah and their children William, Sophia, Ann, Jane and James complete the household. Thomas's son Alfred (with wife, also a Sarah and three children) is enumerated as the next household.

Thomas has not been identified on the 1871 census. It is likely his is the death noted by FreeBMD as occurring during the second quarter of 1864 within the Reading Registration District. Berkshire BMD notes the death was registered in the St Giles Reading Registration Sub District and that Thomas was 65 years old.

Thomas's widow Sarah marries John MIDDLEMOST at the Parish Church of St Giles in 1870.

Research Notes

(1) It is possible this couple are the Thomas Reeves who married Charlotte DINES in May 1827 at Pangbourn (sic), with Henry mentioned above being their first born child in c1828. Pangbourne, Berkshire is adjacent to Whitchurch, Oxfordshire. Further research is required on this possibility.

(2)Per Berkshire BMD at http://berkshirebmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi?county=berkshire, in 1851 there were two individuals named James Reeves registered, both in the St Giles sub district. FreeBMD lists one birth during the first quarter of 1851 and the second during the fourth quarter. Since this James Reeves does not appear on the 1851 census, it is presumed he was born in the fourth quarter.
