The Samuel V. Reeves papers include written statements by Henry S. Reeves dated 14 Jan 1887, son of William. Even though he did not know his grandfather's name, this William can be identified as the son of Samuel because he states that William had a full brother named Morgan and that he knew of others named Harrison, Van, and Barnes C. Reeves whom he thought were the half-brothers of his father. In fact Van and Barnes were cousins while Harrison was his brother. He correctly named the children of Morgan. At any rate, this helps identify this William as the son of Samuel Reeves. Henry states that his father William Reeves was born 8 Sep 1797 in Pennsylvania and was married to Louisa Speere Apil 1828. He states that "At the time of his marriage he carried on a tannery with his brother Morgan afterwards traded on the river for cometime (sic) since then until within about seven years of his death (when he retired) was a merchant." He could not remember his grandfather's name but knew the family was from Pennsylvania and his father was a Methodist. He states that William was buried 9 Nov 1861 in the Wesleyan Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Henry states that he had siblings Louis Reeves born 11 Oct 1831 and buried 26 Mar 1838 in Pennsylvania; William Reeves born 25 Nov 1833. William moved to Batesville, Arkansas and died there 7 Mar 1881. Sisters were Sarah Reeves, b. 27 Oct 1829; Eliza Reeves, b. 9 Feb 1836; Mary Reeves, b. 17 Apr 1838; Martha Reeves, b. 6 Dec 1840; and Mary Louisa Reeves, b. 13 Nov 1842. He had deceased sisters Sarah, Mary and Eliza. Sarah died 10 Nov 1832, Mary on 30 May 1842, and Eliza on 23 Apr 1861.

Henry further states concerning his family:
Father William Reeves educated in Penn. Came to Ohio in 1840 I believe. He first came to Springfield then to Ashland and then to Cincinnati. I cannot tell you much about his ancestry as his parents both died while he was quite young. Wm. Reeves my brother was a soldier in the late Rebellion. He was educated in Cincinnati. In looking over some old ledgers of Father's dated 33 & 34 I find that some of the old names were Jesse, Polly, Samuel, Mannasseh, Reeves.
