The Biographical & Historical Memoirs of Western Arkansas states that he had a full sister named Mary J., wife of Thomas Green. He was raised by an uncle, Moses Reeves, until age ten when he began working on a wood boat on the Cumberland River. He later began farming and moved to Montgomery County, Arkansas and was still living there at time of publication.

Enlisted as corporal in Company A, Arkansas 1st Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army on 14 Feb 1863. Later promoted to Full Sergeant.

In the 1870 census of Montgomery County, Arkansas, William Reeves' occupation is recorded as Sheriff.
