From ''Reliques of the Rives":
Edmund Harris Rives was born about 1783, presumably in Prince George county, Virginia, removing early in life to Davidson county, Tennessee. As early as 1808 he purchased for $400 from Robert Carter Rives 40 acres in Davidson county on the west fork of Mill Creek; and, in the same year, 38 acres on the Big Harpeth river. In 1814 Robert Carter Rives conveyed to Edmund Rives, of Davidson county, 1 1/2 acres on Hogan’s Branch in that county. On January 31, 1818, in a deed made by him to Abraham De Moss of 15 acres on the north side of the Big Harpeth river, the land is described as being “one ninth part which the said Edmund Rives is entitled to as one of the heirs of Thomas Harding, deceased, out of his widow Betsey Harding’s dower.” On March 5, 1834, he conveyed to William W. Johnston in Williamson county, Tennessee, 100 acres on Hay’s Creek, the witnesses to which were John H. and Giles Rives. In December, 1841, letters of administration were granted on his estate in Humphreys county, Tennessee, to S. E. Harris and William McCaslin. The inventory shows that he was possessed of 348 acres of land in that county alone, nine slaves, and much other personality. Edmund Rives married Mary Ann, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Harding, of a prominent Tennessee family of that name, the marriage bond being dated January 13, 1807, in Davidson county. According to his living granddaughter, Mrs. Louisa America Roberts, and other sources, he had issue:
