From Reliques of the Rives:
Howard Pendleton Rives, who was born May 6, 1888, was graduated in law from Cumberland University in 1913 and was admitted to the Kentucky bar the same year, following which he was associated with his brother-in—law, Judge E. B. Beard, in the law firm of Beard & Rives at Shelbyville, Ky., until 1916. On Sept. 22, 1915, he was commissioned a Captain of infantry in the Kentucky National Guard, serving on the Mexican border in 1916 and 1917 with Co. K, 1st Ky. Inf. From 1917 to his discharge from the army on February 12, 1920, he served with the 38th Division in the United States and overseas in the A. E. F. After his discharge be returned to Shelbyville and resumed the practice of law as a member of the firm of Kinsolving, Rives & Smith until 1925 when he removed to Clearwater, Fla., where he continued the practice of law as a member of the firm of Kelley, Rives & Castle. Capt. Rives died April 25, 1927, following an operation for appendicitis.

Death record states he was born in 1889. Headstone says 1888 and gives only the year.

SHELBYVILLE GIRL WEDS SOLDIER SWEETHEART
Shelbyville, Ky., Mov. 25 - The marriage of Miss Betsey Ray and Capt. Howard P. Rives, U. S. A., at Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Miss., yesterday evening was announced in a telegram received here this morning. The bride is the second daughter of Dr. W. R. Ray, who was the Representative from Shelby county in the Kentucky Legislature for the 1914-15 term. Miss Ray left here Friday evening ostensibly to be the guest of Mrs. E. B. Beard, who has been at the camp for a week or more on a visit to her brother, Capt. Rives, but it is now known that the marriage was prearranged. Capt. Rives was in command of Company K, 1st Kentucky Regiment, from its organization until it was incorporated in the artillery arm of the service, when he was transferred to the military police at Camp Shelby.

HOWARD RIVES DIES
CLEARWATER, April 26. - (Tribune News Service.) - Howard Rives, member of the law firm of Kelly, Rives and Casler, died at a hospital yesterday. His death was attributed to complications arising from an operation Thursday. Mr. Rives is survived by a wife and two children. Burial will be at Shelbyville, Ky., his former home.
