From Reliques of the Rives:
Joel Rives, a legatee named in the will of his father, William Rives, in Sussex county, Virginia, in 1777, was born in Virginia, presumably in Prince George county, on April 6, 1761, and was "a young volunteer in the patriot army of the War of the Revolution," according to a family bible record, now in the possession of Mrs. Clauselle Whiting Baptist Rives, of Birmingham, Alabama, to whom the compiler is under obligations for this and other data regarding the descendants of Henry Rives. According to this same bible record, Joel Rives married Jemima Bonner, born March 11, 1761, who, Mr. Andrew Pierce Rives, grandson of Joel Rives, states, was a daughter of Colonel Henry Bonner. The service of Joel Rives in the Revolutionary War is confirmed by Knight (Georgia's Roster of the Revolution) who shows a grant of land to Joel Rives, of Hancock county, Georgia, for his military service. Joel Rives is stated to have married Jemima Bonner in Virginia about 1789 and to have removed with her to Georgia about 1792. He died at Sparta in Hancock county, Georgia, in 1820, and his wife in Stewart county, Georgia, in 1841.
Georgia's Roster of the Revolution states that Joel Rives was granted his land in Hancock County, District 14, 29 Dec 1825. Reliques records he died in 1820, however, this grant and an 1828 deed indicate otherwise.
