He attended the district schools, afterwards taking a business course; and was a merchant for some years in Greenfield and Carlinville, Illinois. He returned early in life, however, to the old family homestead which he owned at the time of his death, July 18, 1926. He was a man of very strong character, possessed an unusually keen sense of humor, and was widely known and respected in his community.
