Narrative
The Times-Picayune, 3 Oct 1844Tait, the Murderer. - Gov. Fitzpatrick, of Alabama, has issued a proclamation offering a reward of four hundred dollars for the apprehension of Charles Tait, who murdered Whitmill W. Rives on the 14th ultimo, in Wilcox county.
This item states he died on the 14th. However, a later publication of the actual proclamation states he died on the 16th after "a most wanton and unprovoked attack, inflicting a wound with a nine barrell 'Colt's repeating' pistol."
In 1845, Sarah A. Rives of Wilcox County, Alabama relinquished her to right "unto the Estate of Whitmil W. Rives decd as widow and relict of the said Whitmil W. Rives decd."
