John Ryves, of Tarrant Gunville, co. Dorset, born in 1592, the second son of John Ryves of Ranston, became an eminent divine like so many of his family. He was elected to Winchester College at the age of 1 1 and was admitted in 1604 as "of Randleston, Dorset" (Kirby). He matriculated at New College, Oxford, 26 June 1612, aged 19, and his career, as recorded by Foster, reads further, "B. C. L., 8 April 1619; rector of Tarrant Gunville, Dorset, 1620; canon of Sarum, 1625; archdeacon of Berks, 1634; and rector of North Mereton, Berks, 1634; rector of Manston, Dorset, 1635; canon of Winchester, 1660; d. 19 Aug. 1665." Hutchins shows him as second son of John Ryves of Ranston, "aet. 28, 1623, Archdeacon of Berks, d. 19 Aug. 1665." A staunch Royalist, as were all the Ryves, he was deprived of his livings during the period of the Commonwealth. For his loyalty to the Stuarts, his widow was granted a pension of £25 after his death in 1665 when she was left with thirteen children (Records of Dorset Committee in Commonwealth).
Over the south door of the chancel of the old church of Tarrant Gunville, co. Dorset, there was formerly this inscription:
JOHANNES RYVES DE RANSTON, IN PAROCHIA DE SHREWTON NATUS POSTQUAM SUB NEATAE MARIAE AUSPICIIS IN COLL. WINTONIENSI PUERITIAM AD ARTES INFORMASSET, IN NOVUM COLLEGIUM SOCIUS EST COOPTATUS, ET EXINDE L. L. BACCALAUREATU INSIGNITUS PROD IIT. CUM PER ANNOS QUADRAGINTA QUATUOR RECTOR ECCLESIAE HUIC PRAEEUISSET, SACRARIUM HOC INIQUITATE TEMPORIS EX PARTE DELAPSUM NON SOLUM REPARAVIT, SED AD TEGMEN USQUE FUNDITUS EXTRUXIT. ANNO D'NI 1664. AETATIS SUAE 72. OB. 19 DIE MENSIS AUGUSTI 1665.
He evidently married a daughter of Dr. Robert Tounson, Bishop of Salisbury, whose widow, Margaret, in her will dated 30 August 1633 (P. C. C. 30 Sadler) named "John Ryves, clarke, my loveing sonne in lawe" one of her executors. No will of his is to be found but it has been possible to identify some eight of his thirteen children.
