Richard is mentioned in the will of his grandfather Robert Ryves and also in the visitation of 1565, which states he was the third son of John Ryves of Damory Court.

The will of his nephew Dr George Ryves Warden of New College, Oxford mentions the following members of this family:

• my cozen Timothie Ryves the sonne of my uncle Richard Ryves
• my cosen Amy Ryves his sister fortie poundes to be Delivered unto her brother Timothie
• my cosin Elizabeth Meggs sister unto the sayed Tymothie Ryves

According to Reliques of the Rives:
Richard has left to posterity only the bare record of his name to distinguish his existence. Hutchins records him as the third son and sixth child of John Ryves of Damory Courtand notes that he was "living 20 October 1549," the date of the will of his grandfather, Robert Ryves, from which it may be inferred that he was mentioned therein. There is neither will nor inq. p. m. of his of record, and it is not known whether he made his home at Blandford or Shaftesbury, co. Dorset, at one or the other of which places the Ryves appear to have been settled during the 16th century. Nor is the name of his wife known, nor the names of any of his children save the one who is given by Hutchins, viz:

The most likely spouse for Richard would be Jone Mogg who married a Richard Ryves at All Saints Church, Castle Cary, Somerset on 21 May 1576 (which would have been the bride's parish) - see Somerset Marriages, Somerset & Dorset Family History Society.
