From Middle Temple Admissions in 1597:

• 30 July. Mr. Richard, third son of Robert Ryves, late of Randleston, Dorset, gent., deceased, specially; no fine, being admitted by favour of Richard Swayne, esq.,

Reliques of the Rives mistakenly separated this individual into two separate entries for a father and son both named Richard. However, the visitations of Dorset clearly show it was Richard, son of Robert and Margaret, who married Edith and had the children named in the will of Richard from 1631. The full entries from Reliques is given below. Thus it becomes clear why Childs was unable to find anything on Richard after his admission to the middle temple in 1597.

The visitations of Dorset from 1623 indicate that Richard was the 4th son of Robert of Randleston, that he was married to Edith, daughter of John Seamore (Seymour) of Hanford in Dorset. The following children are listed:

• Ric'us Rives filis promog' aet. 7 annor. (Richard Rives firstborn son age 7 in this year (1623))
• Anna aet. 9 (Anna age 9)
• Elizab. aet. 6 (Elizabeth age 6)
• Edith aet. 3 (Edith age 3)
• Dorothe aet. 1 (Dorothy age 1)

Note that the age given in the visitation for son Richard is about two years off of the corresponding age at his "matriculated at Hart Hall, Oxford, 7 Nov. 1634, aged 16."

Richard Ryves of Childe Okeford, Dorset, wrote his will on 15 Mar 1630/1 and it was proved 23 Jul 1631. He mentions the following individuals:

• my fower daughters Ann Elizabeth Edith and Dorothy Ryves
• my cosen Geo Ryves of Randleston Robert Ryves and Robert Burbidge (aid to wife)

Richard Ryves, born in 1568, third son of Robert Ryves, of Randleston, was living as late as 1597. Hutchins gives his baptism at Ewerne Courtney, 22 November 1568, but adds nothing further concerning him. He is known to have studied law at the Middle Temple where he was admitted, 30 July 1597 as "third son of Robert Ryves of Randleston, of co. Dorset, gent., deceased." It is not known whom he married but he very evidently had issue, amongst others: (see above).

Richard Ryves of Childe Okeford, co. Dorset; born about 1597; died 1631; is confused by Hutchins (the only major error detected in his pedigree of Ryves) with Richard Ryves son of John Ryves of Randleston. Such an identification is negatived, if for no other reason, by the mention in the will (post) of Richard Ryves of Childe Okeford of "my Cosen George Ryves of Randleston," i. e., George Ryves, son of John Ryves of Randleston. Richard Ryves of Childe Okeford, con sequently, must have been a nephew of John Ryves of Randleston. The children of Robert Ryves are accounted for; Mathew Ryves is credited with one son; and there remains only Richard Ryves as the possible parent of Richard Ryves of Childe Okeford. The only testimony for him is his will:

I, Richard Ryves, of Childockford, co. Dorset, gentleman . . . bequeath my soule into the handes of Almightie God, hopinge and assuringe myselfe to be saved by the pretious death and passion of my only saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ, my body to be buried in the parish church of Childockford. I give unto the poor of the parish of Sturminster Newton, co. Dorset, 40 s. I give unto my servant John Nicholls £10, unto my servant Robert Bowden 40 s. and one of my cloaks. I give unto all my maidservants 20 s. apeece. I devise unto my wife all my freehold lands in Childockford until my son Richard shall accomplish his 22nd year directing her to cause him to be bredd up in learning and other discipline. And whereas it was and is my chief ayme and intent to breed upp my said sonne in learning and other education whereby to make him readye and fitt to doe my right worshipfull good freind and kinsman Sir Thomas Freke1 and his children service. Now I shall be prevented by death before I can accomplish my said desyer and intention therein. Then I hereby humbly desier the said Sir Thomas Freke to take my said purpose and intention into his consideration and to bestowe upon my said sonne his respect countenance and favour and to accept of him as his servant when my said sonne shall be able and fitt to doe him service.' All the rest of my goods I hereby give unto Edith my deerely beloved wief whom I make my sole Executrix intreating her to imploy it . . . amongst my fower daughters Ann Elizabeth Edith and Dorothy Ryves. . . . And I direct them to be ruled by her both in their breeding and preferment in marriage with the advice of my Cosen George Ryves of Randleston, Robert Ryves and Robert Burbidge whom I hereby intreate to be ayding and assisting unto my said wife and children therein. I give unto Edward Sliby one of my cloakes and such other of my apparrell as my wief shall thincke fitt. . . . Whereas I have byn for divers yeares past trusted about the receiving of the Rents of certaine lands in Beere marshe called the Bridge lands and during that time have disbursed in and about the repairinge of Heyward Bridge and the wages and passages thereunto adjoining divers sums of money and doe conceave that there is in my handes of the same rents more than I have disbursed in my reparations £12 I doe direct my wife to pay them unto the said Sir Tho: Freke to be by him and the other feoffees of the said bridge ymployed about the repayringe of it as they shall think fitt. Witnesses: George Ryves, Robert Ryves, Abrah Forester, Thomas Brewer, Ro: Burbydge.
