January 2019 - Happy New Year

Happy New Year

We hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and wish you a Happy and Healthy 2019.

Its been a busy year here at The Reeves Project. As you may recall the year got off to a bad start with the protracted outage and it was relief to all of us when we were able to relaunch TRP on 27 March 2018. That new platform and version of the wiki software as has served us well over the past nine months.

As if to make up for that early disappointment, 2018 subsequently turned into a bumper year for TRP.   Collectively we added just over 1200 new pages, which is the third highest annual number of new pages since TRP launched back in 2010 and more than double the number of pages added in each of the previous four years. However, the sad part is that the vast majority of those new pages came from just a handful of contributors. As I've frequently mused in the past, just think how much faster TRP would grow if each of our community members added just one new page each month.

Wiki Stats - End December 2018

The total number of pages in the Wiki (as at 1 January 2019) now stands at 8393 (previously 8309, 8228, 8118) an increase of 84 pages during the month. Of the total, 1653 pages (was 1648, 1628, 1613) begin with a number and are most probably a date related gleaning.     We currently have 3655 wiki pages categorised as "People", of which 3206 begin with the letter "R".
Community members should log in to see more.

TRP Users

We ended December 2018 with 360 user accounts registered in TRP with three new members successfully activating their account during the month. We welcome new community members Eric, Cece and Steven and look forward to reading their contributions to TRP.

If you have yet to do so, please set a meaningful name for yourself as described in First Steps - Part 1. It isn't difficult and only takes a couple of minutes to do.

If you have already started the enrolment process and are having issues, please do let us know. Please contact New User Admin by sending an email to TRP123 (at) TheReevesProject (dot) org if you're stuck and need help. If you are not yet a member and would like to contribute to our community, please complete our Join Us form to start the membership enrolment process.

Two New Milestones

On 11 December TRP served up its ten millionth page to a visitor and on 27 December we saw the 5,000,000 visit to a wiki page. The information we collectively contribute here does get noticed. If you’ve yet to add information about your Reeves ancestors, then you are missing out on potential opportunities to be noticed and make contact with Reeves cousins. (We served up our 9.5M page in mid July 2018 and our 9.0M page in November 2017.) To understand why I get so excited by this ever increasing number, you may want to look back at news page for December 2017.

Software Upgrade

At the start of October we reported that the admins had just started working on the next upgrade of the software underpinning our wiki. Over the past three months we've played with a newer version of the wiki software hosted on an upgraded operating system platform. We've not found any show-stopping issues and are currently working out the detail of how we migrate from the current to the new. We are aiming to keep TRP running whilst we execute the change, but that will likely involve a few days when pages on the the current system can not be changed (or when those changes will be lost). We'll add further information here in the coming days, so please keep checking back.

As much as I hate tempting fate, just in case things don't go to plan, please make sure you have a browser book marked for our Google Site The ReevesProject123 https://sites.google.com/site/thereevesproject123/

Reeves DNA Project Update

Its probable that the following summary misses one or more events, either new members joining or new Y-DNA result matches. Between about 24 October and 4 December there was a technical issue with the FtDNA systems which meant Group Project Admins did NOT receive some types of notification e-mails. We rely on those e-mails to alert us to new results so we can review them for matches with our existing groups and to pull together these quarterly summaries. If I've failed to acknowledge you as a new member of our project community or note your new Y-DNA results below, please do contact us and let us know.

In October we welcomed five new members to the project; Leonard, Bryan, Jazz and Deborah. (Yes I can count, one individual joined twice with two different kits.) We also had two members leave the group in October. Two new members joined us in November, one of whom has since resigned from the project leaving Lauren. In December, we had two new members join the project; Margaret and Joshua. Welcome one and all.

During the quarter we've seen no new Y-DNA results and just one upgrade results. We've also seen two new sets of mtDNA results and no new Family Finder (at-DNA) results added for project members. (But as noted above, this may be an under-reporting due to the lack of notification e-mails received by the Project's admins.)

Whilst we have no new results to report, four of our new project members had tested prior to joining the Reeves DNA Project and have been grouped as follows.
Kit 23843 for BW added to DNA Group 7
Kit 46947 for LS added to DNA Group 6a
Kit 48072 for LS added to ungrouped
Kit 813319 for JR added to DNA Group 10

If you missed last quarter's summary the  DNA Project Update for 3q2018 is available here.
