Richmond Co., VA

History


Along with Essex County, Richmond County was formed from Old Rappahannock County on April 26, 1692. Old Rappahannock County then ceased to exist. The county was named for Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond, illegitimate son of King Charles II. The county is located on the Northern Neck, it is not to be confused with the city of Richmond, which is in Henrico County.

Modern Day Adjacent Counties

Richmond County is bordered by Westmoreland, Northumberland, Lancaster and Essex counties.
