Research, Analysis & Discussion

Chris,

It appears that your Thomas C. Reeves was the son of Susannah Reeves and Spencer Reeves (no known relation) of Fleming County KY. See Susannah's page - Reeves_Susannah_3792 and Spencer's - Reeves_Spencer_3791.

And at the Reeves Project, we strive for primary source documents - no GEDCOMs, no undocumented family histories, etc. One of our goals is to create a database that doesn't include all of the family trees of dubious sources that the internet is so full of.

Beverly,
Thanks for your response. I'm finally just starting to read about the mechanics of joining and using this site.

I've read the pages on Susannah and Spencer Reeves on this site, but still don't see something solid, a will or other document that links Thomas C. Reeves to Spencer and Susannah Reeves, as well as something that links my Sylvester Reeves to Tho. C Reeves.

Once I've read through all your user guides, I'd like to set up a Thomas C Reeves page. I have some information about him in "The History of Schuyler and Brown Counties, Illinois", written in the late 19th century.

I also have a lot of information about Sylvester Reeves and would like to set up that page.

I also have some information about Spencer and Elijah Reeves in 1785 Kentucky I'd like to post

But, first, I continue to read TRP first steps.

Chris,

That sounds like a great plan and we'll look forward to your adding a page for Thomas C. Reeves and any other family members that you want.

I came home and searched thru the records I've saved on my computer and can't find where I came upon the listing of Spencer and Susannah Reeves' children, but I did find documents that connect Thomas to that family. It's no will, but I believe it indicates that he was part of that family.

I attached two pages from the probate of Spencer Reeves, Jr.'s estate to his page - Reeves_Spencer_4306. Thomas is listed along with other children (Elijah, Noah and Samuel Ismael the husband of Nancy Reeves) of Spencer and Susannah as a buyer at the estate sale of Spencer Jr. There was also a George Reeves that I haven't placed yet. Noah Reeves was the admin of his brother Spencer Jr's estate. It's no smoking gun but it is a connection to that family.

The fact that there are two Thomas Reeves in Fleming County born about 10 years apart makes me wonder if I have the wrong Thomas Reeves as Spencer's son. In the 1830 census Paul Reeves, Thomas D. Reeves and Thomas C. Reeves are all living next door to each other. I still believe Thomas C. is part of that family, but at this point I've begun to think that I have no idea exactly who his parents were.

I don't know if you've searched the deed records yet but many times there are distributions of land that name all the children and provide as much information as a will.

Beverly,

May I ask how were the children's names of Spencer Reeves Sr. and Susannah Reeves determined? Is there a Will or Deed listing them? I've seen their 1790 marriage document at Mason County, but so far have found no deed or will for Spenser Sr.

I've seen family trees listing Paul Reeves and Thomas D Reeves as children of Spenser and Susannah but without references. I've been looking at the 1810 and 1820 census entries for Spenser Reeves Sr. to see if any family trees match the census entry, without conclusions so far.

Four census entries (1850-1880)for Thomas C Reeves listing his age make his birth year 1808 in Kentucky. In 1810 Thomas would be 2, and the 1810 census for Spenser Reeves lists one child under 10, but that could also be Paul Reeves. In 1820, Thomas C would be 12, but there is no 12 year old in Spencer Reeves 1820 census entry, but there is an entry for age 16-18 which could be Paul.

May I ask how you search for deed records, for example from Fleming County, Ky?

Thanks for your responses, and happy new year.

Chris

Chris,

I arrived at that list of Spencer and Susanna's children by finding what appeared to be credible pedigrees online (no dubious sources known to be extremely flawed), then searching for what records I could find of the families they married into (which is sometimes a great help) and using the marriage records of Fleming County to verify information from online pedigrees, etc. It is basically based upon proximity which is not a particularly credible genealogical source.

As I mentioned previously, the probate documents for Spencer Reeves, Jr. include most of these male children primarily as buyers at the estate sale. This is usually a valid method because normally the estate sales consisted of family members in addition to a few neighbors.

In retrospect, maybe I shouldn't have even attempted to identify Spencer's children without a more extensive search, and in reexamining this family, I have become convinced that it was Thomas D. Reeves who was Spencer's child, not Thomas C. and plan to change that on Spencer's page.

As for searching deed records - you can order microfilm through an LDS Family Resource Center for a small rental fee. They have recently increased the price to $7.50 per reel but the reel stays in that center for 90 days giving you ample time search it. Previously when they charged $5.00, the reel was only kept for 30 days. Just go to www.familysearch.org and look at the catalog. You can also look for locations of Research Centers there. You will see a listing of all the microfilm reels that are available for a particular county. It's the best way I know to avoid driving 1000 miles to the courthouse. I have 4 or 5 reels at the local LDS center most of the time and sometimes as many as 10 to 12.

Family Search also has one group of marriage records (Kentucky County Marriages) online that has wonderful original scanned documents such as parental consents and the marriage bonds. I found almost all of my Reeves in Madison County, Kentucky in that collection but it doesn't seem to include any Fleming County marriages.

Thanks Beverly for this very useful and helpful information. I'm traveling from Florida back to California now and will get back to this next week. I found a 1914 obituary for Delilah Reeves-McDannald-Blair who my relatives say in their 1936 research is Thomas C Reeves sister. The obituary states that her father was John Reeves and mother Susan Harmon, so that's where I will start next week.
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

Good luck with the new area of research. Today I looked up the order numbers for the Fleming, Kentucky grantor and grantee deed indexes and I plan to order them before the day is over.

If you have any questions about ordering thru the Family Search website, just let me know. They've made a few changes recently and it seems a little more difficult to navigate. My email address is beverly_wat at msn.com

Chris,
Recently I accidentally happened upon another Thomas Reeves who might be a candidate for your Thomas C. In the course of adding census information for Fleming County, I found that Asa Reeves' adopted son Benjamin Reeves had a son Thomas. I haven't found any information about Thomas yet but he definitely needs to be investigated.

This would also explain the connection to Susannah & Spencer Reeves because Susannah was Benjamin's sister (adopted) and their children would have been first cousins.

There is a published biography and a lot of other information online regarding Benjamin's son Benjamin F. Reeves. I have added the biography to his page in this wiki.

Have you had any luck with Delilah Reeves McDannald Blair?

Debra,
Please leave the # at the beginning of the line with children's names. That wiki formatting provides numbering for children.

Also, I see you have removed my notation that the children were undocumented. If there is a family bible where their names and DOBs are recorded, please share that with The Reeves Project, i.e. adding a transcription of the bible and/or a link to an online source.

Thanks for removing "Vesta". I had searched everywhere and couldn't find another reference to her/him.

Hi Debra,
I see that you have started a page for Samuel Sylvester Reeves. If you were having trouble with the coding and such, let me know here and I'll try to help. This morning I did change the name of the page to wiki format. It is now Reeves_Samuel_Sylvester_4718. There can't be any spaces in a page name so I've added underscores between the names in addition to a 4 digit identifying number. Granted, there probably aren't many Samuel Sylvester Reeves, but because there are so many given names like William, George, Thomas, etc. used repeatedly, adding a number is the only way to keep them unique and identifiable. Sadly, the wiki software doesn't have an option for automatically adding numbers so most of us just keep a listing of the numbers we've used.

You had mentioned to me yesterday that you were in need of help with wiki coding, so if you need help with this new page, just post any questions here.
