Narrative

Children of Elisha Reeve and Phebe Saybolt:
  1. John S. Reeve, b. 16 Nov 1805

The probate of his father Elijah's will states that Elisha was of Wall Kill, New York in 1793. At the time this was in Ulster County.

Goshen First Pres Church records lists the following marriage for Elisha:
  • (Jany 1788) ? Elisha Reeve Junr & Phebe Saybolt

Phebe Reeve is mentioned as a daughter in the 1789 will of her father John Michel Seybolt. Two of her siblings married two of Elisha's siblings.

In the 1790 census, we find two Elisha Reeves listed in Mamakating, Ulster County, about ten miles from Wallkill. This Elisha is denoted as Elisha W. Reeves and had one male under 16 and a total of three females.

Elisha Reeve was listed as "Junr" on the census in Deerpark, Orange County in 1800. He was only one page over from where his father Elijah was listed.

Elisha is on the tax lists from Deerpark, Orange County from 1799-1802.

In 1805, Elisha Reeve of Deerpark sold some land in Orange County. His wife Phebe signed with him. In 1809, Elisha and Phebe Reeve of Deerpark, Orange County sold some land to Josiah Van Inwagen. This establishes that Elisha who married Phebe was the one in Deerpark at that point.

In 1810, Elisha was still in Deerpark with one male under 10, one male age 10-15, two females under 10, two females 10-15, one female 16-25, and one female 26-44 (presumably Phebe). Elisha was in the over 45 category.

By 1820, Elisha had moved to Mamakating, then in Sullivan County. He had one male age 10-15 with him along with a female 10-15 and one over 45 (Phebe). Elisha was in the over 45 category.

In 1820, Elisha was listed two doors down from Benaiah A. Skinner in Mamakating. In 1830, he is listed as Elisha "Rivers" but is listed next door to Deborah Skinner, the widow of Benaiah. This would seem to confirm this is Elisha Reeves.

In an 1835 deed from Sullivan County, Elisha and Phebe Reeve of Mamakating sold some land to Daniel Corwin. This establishes that Elisha who married Phebe was indeed the one living in Mamakating.

In 1850, John S. Reeve "surviving executor of the estate of Elisha Reeve deceased of the town of Mamakating County of Sullivan" sold some land to William Mossman.

Nov. 22-At Brownsville, Phebe, relict of Elisha Reeve, esq., late of Deerpark, in the 89th year of her age.

Research Notes

The 1790 census is the only record which indicates a middle initial of "W" for Elisha.

This is probably the Elisha Reeve (c22 Dec 1764 - 3 Jun 1838) buried in the Clarks Burial Ground in Sullivan County. See Findagrave.
