Narrative
Nothing is presently known with certainty about Jeffrey's early life. On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Jeffrey appears in the household of Samuel REEVE and his wife Eliza (nee NIXON) and Jeffrey is presumed to be their son. The family are living on Stow Lane in Ixworth, Suffolk.FreeBMD notes the marriage of Jeffery (sic) REEVE and Mary BYFORD in Thingoe Registration District during the first quarter of 1845.
The known child of Jeffrey REEVE and his wife Mary (nee BYFORD) is
- Harriet Emily REEVE
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Jeffry (sic) and his wife Mary are living on High Street, Ixworth. He is 31 years of age and his place of birth is shown as Botesdale, Suffolk. He is working as a Journeyman Butcher. His wife Mary is 36 years old and also claims birth in Botesdale, Suffolk. Their daughter Harriet is not part of the household. See Research Note 1 below. It is likely they were sharing the building with Alfred Reeve and his wife also called Mary. They are enumerated on consecutive schedules with only a partial ruled line between them.
In March 1852 Jefffery was tried at Bury St Edmonds court of "Stealing Fowls" and convicted to ten years imprisonment. He has been identified on returns from Portland Convict Prison, Dorset to the Home Office for the quarters ending 30 June 1855, 31 December 1855 and 30 June 1856. In the June 1856 return it is noted that he had been Discharged by Licence on 05 April 1856.
He reappears in the Portland Convict Prison, Dorset return for the period ending 31 March 1858. While his crime, date and place of conviction remain the same his sentence is now 10 years Trans(portation). He is the last individual named in that quarter's return and in the column head "Behaviour during the Quarter" it is noted "Lately Arrived". In the following quarter's return to 30 Jun 1858 he is noted as having been convicted of "Larceny & pre: con:" (presumably shorthand for previous conviction). In the return for the period ending 30 September 1858 it is noted that Jeffrey Reeve was "Embarked to W. A. - 18 August 1858".
Jeffrey was transported on the ship "Edwin Fox" which left Plymouth, Devon on 26 August 1858 bound for the Swan River Colony. The ship arrived in Freemantle, Western Australia on 20 November 1858.
There are two potentially pertinent entries in the Bicentennial Dictionary of Western Australians.
REEVE, Jeffrey, b.1822 (expiree). Arr 21.11.1858 per Edwin Fox, wife & chd. in U.K. Employed a T/L Labourer at Perth 1871.There can be little doubt this relates to our subject; the ship & dates match other sources and we know Jeffrey was married with one child prior to his transportation to Australia.
REEVE, Charles Jeffreys, b.1822 (expiree). Arr 21.11.1858 per per Edwin Fox, wife & chd. in U.K. m. Hannah Agnes ATKINSON b.1852 (Claremont) d.1842. Chd. (All Wesl), Charles Valentine b. 1885, Alfred William b. 1886, Florence Victoria b. 1887, Son b. 1888, Ellen May b. 1889. Butcher, Perth. Mrs Reeve was gatekeeper at Stirling St. Railway Crossing 1879. Arr. & dep 21.1.1888 per Briannia for Eastern colonies.Other than the difference in given names, the initial portion of this entry is identical to the entry for Jefffrey. This entry also notes that Charles Jeffreys wsa a Butcher, which was Jeffrey's occupation reported on the 1851 census (and also his father's occupation). The list of those transported on the Edwin Fox shows a only a single REEV* individual. On balance these are probably two entries for the same individual.
Charles Jeffreys REEVE married Hannah Agnes ATKINSON in Australia (date and location unknown).
The known children of Charles Jeffreys REEVE and his second wife Hannah Agnes (nee ATKINSON) are
- Charles Valentine REEVE, born 1885
- Alfred William REEVE, born 1886
- Florence Victoria REEVE, born 1887
- Son, born 1888
- Ellen May REEVE, born 1889
Nothing further is presently known about this couple and their children's lives in Australia.
Research Notes
(1) Jeffrey & Mary's daughter is not with them on the 1851 census. She is included in her grandfather Samuel's household also on High Street, Ixworth, Schedule 37(2) "T/L Labourer" in the first entry from the Bicentennial Dictionary of Western Australians is probably an abbreviation for a "Ticket-of-leave" man, that is a prisoner on parole.
(3) On the English 1861 census, Jeffrey & Mary's daughter Harriet is again to be found living with her paternal grand-parents ((Samuel and Eliza REEVE. (RG9, Piece 1139, Folio 154 face, Page 1, Schedule 5). Jeffrey's wife Mary is working as a Laundry Maid at Little Horkesley Hall in Essex. (RG9, Piece 1105, Folio 135 reverse, Page 4, Schedule 22). Mary has yet to be identified on the 1871 census.
