Narrative

Children of John Reeve and Elizabeth:
  1. John Reeve, b. 1 Nov 1817
  2. Walter Reeve, b. 2 Sep 1819

The will of John Reeve, victualler of Moulsham, mentions his wife Sarah and sons John and Walter. It also mentions property he owned "now in the occupation of Isaac Reeve and Joseph Sharp." The probate states he died 2 Jun 1841.

His family is listed in Chelmsford in 1841. Sarah is listed age 50 as a victualler, with John Reeve (20), Walter Reeve (20), Mary Crozier (40), and John Barefoot (65).

From Chelmsford, St Mary the Virgin, Essex Parish Register:
  • (1841) John Reeve (of) Moulsham (buried) June 6 (age) 57 years (by) James Hutchinson Curate

Sons Walter and John were both born in Essex County according to the 1841 census. The only possible match for Walter is a baptism from 1819 at Great Baddow. Parents are listed as John and Elizabeth. Son John's baptism is also listed there:
  • 1817 Novr 30th, Born Novr 1st, John son of John & Elizabeth Reeve of Gt Baddow Gardener by A. C. Bulle Vicar
  • 1819 Oct 17th, Born Sep 2nd, Walter son of John & Elizabeth Reeve of Gt. Baddow, Gardener by A. C. Bullen Vicar

This indicates Sarah was a second wife and Elizabeth died by 1841. There is a marriage record from Chelmsford, St Mary the Virgin, Essex which reflects this:
  • John Reeve of this parish widower and Sarah Mealon of this parish spinster were married in this Church by License this eight Day of December in the Year One thousand eight hundred and thirty five.

Given his probable connection to Isaac Reeve and his ownership of property in Willingale Doe where Isaac lived, the best match for this John is the one baptized at Willingale Doe on 30 Mar 1784, son of John and Mary Reeve:
  • (1784) Mar 30. John Reeve of John & Mary bapd. tax paid.

Research Notes

There was a John Reeve who married an Elizabeth Matt in 1808 in Chelmsford. The widow was still living in 1851 so is clearly not the same as this John and his first wife Elizabeth.
