John was in West Ham Lane, Straford in the Parish of West Ham, Essex in 1855 when he wrote his will. He had formerly been of Kings Head Inn, Stratford. He mentions the following individuals:
  • son Charles Reeve
  • my daughter Sophia Willett the wife of John Willett of Barking
  • my daughter Ann Oldaper (or Oldaker) the wife of William Oldaper/Oldaker of Great Ilfordin
  • my old and faithful servant Ann Webster

In 1841, John was living in Deptford St. Paul in Kent. He was listed as a licenced victualler. With him were William (24), Charles (17), Sophia (15), along with servants James Saville (51), Jane Webster (38), and Margt Redding (26). The Reeves are all listed as born outside county. It's clear this is the same family is the servant Jane Webster shows up in 1851 with them as appears to be the same as Ann Webster mentioned in the will.

In 1851, John Reeve (age 71), born in Linton, Cambridgeshire, was living in Stratford with his son William (34), listed as a publican born in Stratford, along with Emma Johnson (26) and servant Jane Webster (47).

John's son Charles appears to have lived outside of England in 1855 as the will makes provision for money to be paid him "if he shall return to England and reside there."

From Stratford, St. John, Essex Parish Register:
  • 1856, John Reeve of Stratford, buried Sepr 13, age 76, by W Holloway

The Chelmsford Chronicle, 19 Sep 1856
THE LATE MR. REEVES - On Saturday afternoon, the remains of Mr. John Reeves were interred in the burial ground of St. John's, Stratford. The deceased was well known in that neighborhood, having resided there more than forty years, and his death has created considerable sorrow among the poor of that place, a great number of whom were present at the funeral to pay their last tribute of respect to one whose many acts of unostentative benevolence cannot be too highly commended. Deceased sought out the abodes of the poor and destitute, and by timely aid did much to mitigate the wants and sufferings of his poorer neighbours, who will long cherish the name of their kind benefactor.

Research Notes

Daughter Ann may be Ann, daughter of John and Hannah Reeve, born March 10th 1803 and baptized April 3rd at St Olave, Old Jewry, London. In the census, daughter Ann is described as the cousin of Henrietta Emma Reeve. This would indicate John is a close relative of either her father Richard Reeve or mother Henrietta Emma Reeve.
