Longtime cattle rancher Richard Reeve dies at 82 Longtime cattle rancher Richard Reeve died Wednesday at his home at the San Cayetano Farm, near Tumacacori. He was 82.
Reeve moved to the Tucson area in 1947 and established one of the largest cattle ranches in the Southwest.
One of Reeve’s surviving grandsons is actor Christopher Reeve, who has played the character "Superman" in several movies.
The Bellota Ranch covered more than 100,000 acres of rugged terrain, stretching from Reddington Road on the southeastern corner of the Santa Catalina Mountains northeast to the San Pedro River. Reeve operated the ranch until he sold it in 1978.
The ranch was the subject of a well-known 1969 film documentary about cowboying and traditional ranching methods — called "Bellota: A Story of Roundup."
For many years, Reeve raised a "reputation herd" — cattle that are often bought sight-unseen by the same buyers year after year. He also was involved in the development of the Hereford breed in the Southwest.
Born in Moorestown, N.J., Reeve graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1926. He was a retired U.S. Navy commander, serving in naval intelligence in the Pacific during World War II.
Among his associations, Reeve was a charter member of the Mountain Oyster Club, an honorary lifetime member of the Anglers Club of New York, a longtime member of the San Diego Yacht Club, a member of the Arizona Cattle Growers Association and a member of various state and national Labrador retriever clubs.
Reeve is survived by his wife, Josephine; sons Franklin Reeve, of Vermont, Dr. Richard Reeve, of San Francisco; daughter Anne R. Childs, of Washington DC.; stepchildren Jenifer J. Jones and Josephine R. Voevodsky, both of Tucson; 16 grandchildren, including Christopher Reeve; and four great grandchildren.
Reeve, an avid sailor, will be buried in the Gulf of California, near Guaymas, Sonora. No services will be conducted.
