He was six years old and was born in county (Hampshire).
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Charles again appears in the household of his parent Richard and Elizabeth REEVES in West End, Hampshire. He was then 16 years old, was born in South Stoneham, Hampshire and was working as an Agricultural Labourer.
The marriage of Charles REEVES and Martha BANTING is noted by FreeBMD as occurring during 1q1855 in the South Stoneham Registration District. FamilySearch has a Parish Register transcript showing that Charles REEVES, the son of Richard REEVES, and Martha BUNTING (sic), (those father is not named) were married on 04 March 1855 at the Parish Church of St James, West End, Hampshire.
The known children of Charles REEVES and Martha (nee BANTING) are
- William Olly REEVES, born 1855. See Research Note 1 below.
- Rosa Ann REEVES, born c1858, married 3q1879 John Winters CULL
- Kate REEVES, born 1862, died 1862
At the time of the 1861 census Charles with his wife Martha are living at Moor Green, South Stoneham. Charles claims to be 26 years old and that he was born in South Stoneham. He is working as a Gardener. His wife Martha is also 26 years of age and claims birth in Stockbridge, Hampshire, their son William Oley (sic) Reeves is 5 and daughter Rosa Ann Reeves is 2 months (sic, 2 years expected). Both children were born in South Stoneham. The final member of the household is Charles SMALL (15, a General Servant, born South Stoneham - no known relationship).
A decade later and the 1871 census shows Charles and family living in Kings Worthy, which is close to Winchester in Hampshire. He is 37 years old, from South Stoneham and now working as a Cattle Dealer. Along with this wife Martha (36, born Lower Wallop, Hampshire), son William (15, South Stoneham) and daughter Rosa (11, South Stoneham), there are two Lodgers (no known relationship to either).
Charles REEVES and his wife Martha have yet to be identified on the 1881 census, but see Research Note 2 below.
On the 1891 census, Charles & Martha are living at Avon Villas, 14, Holdenhurst Road, Bournemouth. He is 57 years old and claims birth in Southampton, Hampshire. He is again working as a Gardener.
By the time of the 1901 census Charles & Martha have moved to 27 Stewart Road, Bournemouth. He is consistent with respect to his age, now 67, but now claims birth at West End, in Hampshire, He is a Jobbing Gardener
On the 1911 census Charles is still living at 27 Stewart Road, East Bournemouth, but is now living alone. He is 76 years old, a widower born in South Stoneham, Hampshire. He is a retired gardener and now an Old Age Pensioner. There is a death registration for a Martha Reeves, age 68, during 3q1902 in Christchurch Registration District which is a very good match for Charles's wife.
Charles has not been identified on the 1921 census. FreeBMD notes the death of a Charles Reeves, age 80, was registered during 1q1915 again in the Christchurch Registration district; a very good match for this individual
Research Notes
(1) The birth and baptism of Charles and Martha's son William were independently recorded as William Olly REEVES. On the 1861 census he appears as William Oley ReevesIn later life William prefixed his second given name with a letter "H" and was often referred to as William Holly Reeves. The first documented instance so far identified was William's marriage in 1876
(2) Although Charles and Martha have yet to be identified on the 1881 Census, it is highly likely they had moved to Dorset prior to this census being taken.
- Their daughter Rosa Ann REEVES married John Winters CULL during 3q1879 in the Wimborne Registration District. On the 1881 census John, Rosa and their four month old daughter Rosa Ann CULL have been identified in the hamlet of Pilford in the parish of Hampreston, Dorset.
RG11, Piece 2092, Folio 41 face, Page 13, Schedule 74 - As noted on their son William's page, he with his wife Caroline and their three children have been identified in the hamlet of Colehill, part of neighbouring parish of Wimborne Minster, Dorset. These two hamlets are less than a mile apart.
