Narrative

Charles REEVES is the fourth of five known children (all sons) born to Edward REEVES and his wife Fanny (nee SNUDDEN). The IoW FHS notes his birth was in 1880 and was recorded in the Godshill Registration sub District. The GRO Index to the Registration of Births has an entry for Thomas during the 4q1880 in the Isle of Wight Registration District. Both entries record his mother's maiden name as Snudden.

At the time of the 1881 census, Charles Reeves appears in his parent's household at 14 Market Street, Ventnor, Isle of Wight. He is 6 months old and he was born at Ventnor. He has three older brother at this time, Edward, Thomas and George.

On the 1891 census, Charles is again found with his parents, now living at 15 Surrey Street, Ryde on the Isle of Wight. He is now 10 years of age, his birth place is again given as Ventnor and his occupation is given as Scholar.

It is likely that Charles's mother Fanny died during 3q1896, when he was 15/6 years old. See Research Note 1 below.

By the time of the 1901 census Charles remains in his widowed father's home at 15 Surrey Street, Ryde. His age and place of birth remain consistent, he is single and he is now working as a Butcher's Assistant. The household also includes his brothers Thomas and George.

The marriage of Charles Reeves and Alice LOUGHLIN is noted by FreeBMD during the fourth quarter of 1909 in the Isle of Wight Registration District. The IoW FHS Index to Marriage Registrations notes the marriage is recorded in the register of St Mary's Catholic Church, High Street, Ryde.
There is no known issue of this union.

On the 1911 census Charles and Alice Reeves are living at 37 Green Street, Ryde. Charles is now 30 years old, again claims birth in Ventnor, Isle of Wight and is now working as a Cab Driver. His wife Alice Reeves is 29 years old and she was born in Galway, Ireland. They have been married for one year and have had no children. There are two boarders in the household; Nellie Goater (age 21, single, born Freshwater, IoW) and her daughter also Nellie (2,born Newport, IoW). See Research Note 2 below.

Charles and Alice Reeves have been identified on the 1939 Register at 22 Guildford Street, Portsmouth, Hampshire. He gives his date of birth as 1 September 1880 and he is employed as a General Labour in the Cleansing Department of Portsmouth Corporation; he is classified as a Heavy Worker. He is also a member of the local ARP Decontamination (team). Alice Reeves gives her date of birth as 27 August 1881. The third member of the household is Archibald A Woods (DoB 13 May 1892) and he shares the same occupation as Charles. There are no closed (redacted) entries in this household.

It is possible Charles's death is that noted by FreeBMD during the first quarter of 1958 in the Portsmouth Registration District at the age of 77.
