Narrative

Eliza Reeves is the eighth of ten known children of Charles Reeves and his wife Sophia nee ROBINS. She was baptised at the parish Church of St Martin, Charlton Abbots, Gloucestershire during March 1835.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Eliza appears as a member of her mother's household at Colehay in the parish of Charlton Abbots. She was six years old and was born within the county (Gloucestershire).

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Eliza is living on High Street, Winchcombe, where she is a servant in the household of Maria POYNOR. She is 15 years old, claims birth in Charlton Abbots, Gloucestershire and is employed as a House Servant.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Eliza has moved to the southern outskirts of London, to Denmark Hill, Camberwell, Surrey. She is a servant in the household of Thomas B WINTER and his wife Anne (nee HOBY). Eliza now says she is 24 years old, but remains consistent about her place of birth. She is employed as a Domestic Servant. See Research Note 1 below.

On the 1871 census, Eliza remains in the employment of the WINTER family, but is now living with them in Caterham, Surrey. She now claims she is only 29 years old (rather than 36 which migt be expected) and is now employed as their Cook.

By the time of the 1881 census, Eliza is no longer living with the WINTER family, who remain in Caterham. She has yet to be positively identified on this or any subsequent census return. See Research Note 2 below.

Research Notes

(1) The father of Anne WINTER (nee HOBY) is James HOBY DD, a Baptist Minister. He is with the WINTER family on both 1861 and 1871 census returns.
      See https://www.biblicalcyclopedia.com/H/hoby-james-dd.html

(2) It is possible that Eliza either married or had died before the 1881 census. Her name occurs relatively frequently making identification in the various indices challenging.

There is an Eliza Reeves on the 1901 census at 4 Clifton Terrace, Colwyn Bay, (in the ancient parish of Llandrillo-yn-Rhos) Denbighshire, Wales. This Eliza is single, gives her placee of birth as Gloucester(shire), is 66 years old and is "living on her own means" and is therefore a reasonable fit for our subject. (RG13, Piece 5290, Folio 17 face, Page 25, Schedule 142). This may be worth further investigation.
