Narrative

George Reeves was baptised in April 1837 at the Parish Church of All Saints, Newchurch on the Isle of Wight. He was the seventh of nine known children of William Reeves and his wife Hannah (nee MORRIS). See Research Note 1 below.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, George appears in his parent household in the hamlet of Marsley near Newchurch. He is shown as 4 years old and was born in county (that is to say within Hampshire since the Isle of Wight didn't achieve County status until later).

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, George is again found in the parental home at Marsley. He is now 14 years of age, was born at Newchurch, Hampshire and is working as a Labourer.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows George recorded in the household of his elder brother William in the hamlet of Langbridge in Newchurch. George is now 24 years old and, like his elder brother and father before him, is working as a Thatcher.
FreeBMD notes the marriage of George REEVES and Mary Ann BAKER during the second quarter of 1865 in the Isle of Wight Registration District.
Children of George Reeves and Mary Ann (nee BAKER):
  1. William Reeves, b. c1866
  2. Harry Allen Reeves, b. c1868
  3. Gilbert John Reeves, b. c1871
  4. Alfred George Reeves, b. 1877
  5. Arthur F. Reeves, b. c1885
On the 1871 census, George and his wife Mary Ann are living at Langbridge, next door to his brother William. George was age 32, listed as a thatcher born in Mersley, Isle of Wight, living in Newchurch, Isle of Wight, with wife Mary Ann (26) and sons William (5), Harry Allen (3), and Gilbert John (1mo).

At the time of the 1881 census, George and Mary Ann are still living at Langbridge. George was 42, a thatcher born in Newchurch, Hampshire, living in Newchurch. With him are wife Mary Ann (35) and sons William (14), Harry Allan (12), Gilbert John (10), and Alfred George (3).

On the 1891 census, George and Mary Ann are still living at Langbridge. George was 52, a thatcher born in Newchurch, Hampshire. With him are wife Mary A. (46) and sons Harry A. (22), Gilbert J. (20), Alfred G. (13), and Arthur F. (6).

By the time of the 1901 census, George and Mary are living on Main Road in the hamlet of Langbridge. He is now age 62, with wife Mary A (5) and sons Gilbert J. (29) and Alfred G. (23).

The 1911 census, again records George & Mary Ann living at Langbridge. They have been married 45 years and Mary Ann notes there have been five children born to the marriage, with all five still living. He is now age 73, with wife Mary Ann (66) and their sons Gilbert John (40) and Alfred George (33) again complete the household.

George and Mary Ann's son Alfred died whilst serving during WW1.

The IoW Family History Society records in their Index to Death Registrations the death of a George Reeves in 1920, aged 83 years, in the Brading sub-district, which strongly matches this individual. There is a corresponding entry on FreeBMD in the second quarter of 1920.

Research Notes

(1) George was born just prior to the commencement of Civil Registration in July 1837. However, the birth registration of his younger sister Eleanor (during 3q1839) notes her mother's maiden name as MORRIS. There is also a birth registration for an unnamed female Reeves child which strong matches his sister Ann during 1q1842, again with mother's maiden name of MORRIS.
