Narrative

James is the third (of four) known child of Samuel REEVES and his wife Elizabeth (nee FOUCH). He was baptised in July 1815 at the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Bishops Cleeve, Gloucestershire. The Baptismal Register notes the family were from the hamlet of Gotherington which is in the north of the parish of Bishops Cleeve.

James has yet to be identified on the 1841 census. He was not in his parents household.

It is probable this is the James Reeves who married Mary BROWN at the Parish Church of St Peter, Leckhampton, Gloucestershire in October 1841. They were married after banns and James names his father as Samuel Reeves, a Labourer. FreeBMD notes the marriage during the fourth quarter of 1841 in the Cheltenham Registration District.
The known children of James Reeves and Mary (nee BROWN) are
  1. Samuel George Reeves, bapt July 1842 at Prestbury
  2. William Reeves, bapt June 1844 at Bishops Cleeve
FreeBMD notes the death of a Mary Reeves, age 39, during the second quarter of 1848 in the Winchcomb Registration District. It is likely she is the same Mary Reeves, age 37 (sic), who was buried in April 1848 at the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Bishops Cleeve.

In September 1849 James Reeves (widower) married Mary PRICE (spinster) at the Parish Church of St Mary, Birmingham, Warwickshire after Banns. James identified his father as Samuel Reeves and describes both his and his father's occupation as Butter Dealer.
The known child of James Reeves and Mary (nee PRICE) is
  1. Emma Reeve, bapt October 1851 See Research Note 1 below.
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, James and his wife Mary (nee Price) are living in Gotherington. He is 34 years old and claims birth in Gotherington. He is a Farmer of 12 Acres employing no labourers. Their sons George (8) and William (6) are each described as "Farmer's Son" and his stepson George PRICE (7) is described as a Scholar.

FreeBMD notes the death of a Mary Reeves, age 37, during the fourth quarter of 1859 in the Winchcomb Registration District. It is likely she is the same Mary Reeve (sic) of Gotherington who was buried in November 1859 at the Parich Church of St Martin de Tours, Woolstone. The parish of Woolstone in immediately north of the parish of Bishops Cleeve, with the hamlet of Gotherington closer to the church in Woolstone than Bishops Cleeve.

In June 1860 James Reeves (widower) married Elizabeth Jones (spinster) at the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin,Newent, Gloucestershire. They were married by licence and James is identified as being a Farmer of Gotherington in the Parish of Bishops Cleeve. James named his father as Samuel Reeves who was described as a Dealer.
The known children of James Reeves and Elizabeth (nee Jones) are
  1. Charles Reeves, bapt November 1862
  2. Martha Elizabeth Reeves, bapt April 1867
  3. John Frederick Reeves, bapt March 1869
On the 1861 census, James is still living in Gotherington, along with his new wife Elizabeth and his daughter Emma (age 9) from his second marriage. He now claims he is 42 years old and is a Farmer of 65 Acres employing one man. George Hanting (14) a servant complete the household.

At the time of the 1871 census, James and Elizabeth are living at Baldings (sic Baldwins?) Farm, Gotherington. He now indicates he is a 54 year old Farmer and remains consistent about his birth place. Their three children, Charles (8), John (2) and Martha (11) plus Fanny Kitchens (70, married), whose relationship is given as "Relative" complete the household. See Research Note 2 below.

James has not been identified on the 1881 census and his wife Elizabeth is listed as a Widow, She and her sons Charles and John have moved to Cheltenham. FreeBMD notes the death of James Reeves, age 59, during the second quarter of 1875 in the Winchcomb Registration District. James Reeves, age 59 of Gotherington was buried at the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Bishops Cleeve in May 1875.

Research Notes

(1)    Emma the daughter of James and his second wife Mary (nee Price) is recorded in the GRO Index to Births as Emma REEVE (sic) during the third qurater of 1851. The Parish Baptismal Register for October 1851 shows her surname as REEVES.
(2)     On the 1871 census John and Elizabeth are enumerated on schedule 27. On schedule 29 is the household of Richard Belcher (31), his wife Sarah (nee Lane, 40) and three children William (10), Emily (3) and Lucy (10 months). The household is completed by a boarder Emma Reeves age 1 (sic). FreeBMD has no record of an Emma Reeve(s) born 1868-1871 in Gloucestershire. It is suspected this is James' daughter Emma from his second marriage and that her age has been incorrectly recorded as 1 rather than 19 as might be expected.
