Narrative

Samuel is the fourth (of four) known child of Samuel REEVES and his wife Elizabeth (nee FOUCH). He was baptised in March 1821 at the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Bishops Cleeve, Gloucestershire. The Baptismal Register notes the family were from the hamlet of Gotherington in the north of the parish of Bishops Cleeve

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Samuel was living with his parents Samuel and Elizabeth at Gotherington. This older sibling had already left the parental home.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Samuel Reeves and Ann LANE during the fourth quarter of 1846 in the Cheltenham Registration District. They were married in November 1846 at the Parish Church of St Mary, (GB_GLS_Cheltenham|Cheltenham)), Gloucestershire. The Marriage Register shows they both signed their name and Samuel gives his father's name and occupation as Samuel Reeves, Poulterer.

The known child of Samuel Reeves and his wife Ann (nee Lane) is
  1. William Reeves, bapt May 1850
Samuel and Ann's son William was baptised in May 1850 at the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Bishops Cleeve, at which time the family's abode was shown as Gotherington and Samuel's occupation was Poulterer.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Samuel, Ann and their son William were living in the hamlet of Gotherington in the household of his parents Samuel and Betty. Samuel is shown as being 30 years old, born in Gotherington, Gloucestershire and like his wife and parents Samuel's occupation is noted as a Poulterer.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Samuel still living in Gotherington. He is now head of his own household and his age and place of birth remain consistent with the previous census. He is described as a Farmer of 109 acres employing two men, two women and two boys. In addition to his wife Ann (age 49) and son William (age 10), the household also includes his widowed mother Elizabeth Reeves (age 84) and a male farm servant.

Samuel's wife Ann died and was buried at the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Bishops Cleeve during May 1868. Both the Burial Register and FreeBMD show she was 56 years old.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Samuel Reeves and Maria COOTE during the first quarter of 1870 in the Winchcombe Registration District. They were married by Licence in January 1870 at the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Bishops Cleeve. Samuel is described as being 48 years old, a widower and a Farmer by profession. He named his father as Samuel REEVES and gives his father's profession as "Dealer". Maria is 28 years old and a Spinster, the daughter of Thomas COOTE, a Fly Proprietor. The marriage was witnessed by a William Reeves, perhaps Samuel's son and Harriett Robins (relationship unknown).

The known children of Samuel Reeves and his wife Maria (nee COOTE) are
  1. Laura Rebecca Reeves, bapt February 1871 (See Research Note 1)
  2. Frank Samuel Reeves, bapt March 1872
  3. Emma Jane Reeves, bapt October 1873
  4. Frederick George Reeves, bapt December 1875
  5. George Thomas Reeves, bapt August 1877
  6. Henry Alfred Reeves, bapt August 1879
Their first five children were baptised at Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels Bishops Cleeve. On each occasion the family were described as residing at Gotherington and Samuel's occupation was recorded as Farmer. Their sixth and youngest known child Henry was baptised at the Ecclesiastical Parish Church of St John, Cheltenham. They were then living at 5 High Street, Cheltenham and Samuel's profession is noted as "Greengrocer and Poulterer".

On the 1871 census, Samuel and his new wife Maria are living in Gotherington. He is 48 years old and a Farmer. The household includes their young daughter Laura R Reeves (age 2 months) and a visitor, Thomas COOTE (age 70 and a widower), who is strongly suspected to be Maria's father. A general servant and two farm servants complete the household.

Between August 1877 and August 1879 the family moved to the nearby town of Cheltenham. In August 1879, when their youngest son Henry was baptised at St John's, Cheltenham, they were living at 5 High Street, Cheltenham, just round the corner from the church and Samuel's profession is noted as "Greengrocer and Poulterer".

At the time of the 1881 census, Samuel, Maria and their six children are living at 2 High Street, Cheltenham. Samuel is now 60 years old and again claims birth in Gotherington, Gloucestershire. He gives his occupation as Poulterer.

On the 1891 census, Samuel and Maria are living at 4 Charlton Place, Charlton Kings. He is now 70 years old, says he was born in Bishops Cleeve and that he works as a Poulterer. Their six children complete the household.

By the time of the 1901 census, Maria describes herself as a Widow. She along with her children Laura, Emma, George and Henry have moved away from Gloucestershire and are now living in Southsea.

It is highly likely that the death of this Samuel Reeves is that noted by FreeBMD during the first quarter of 1899 in the Cheltenham Registration District. His age at death was given as 77 years. He was buried at Charlton Kings in February 1899 and the burial register records his abode as Cheltenham and that he was 77 years old.

Research Notes

(1) The GRO Index to Births show Laura second given name as Rebecca whilst the baptismal register show her second name as Rebekah. The GRO Index also shows her mother's maiden name as COOK (sic Coote expected).
