Narrative

Children of Joseph Reeves and Lucy Aynes:
  1. Merritt Reeves, b. c1804
  2. Willis Reeves, b. 1808
  3. Ann Reeves, b. c1810
  4. Wyatt Wolford Reeves, b. 19 Jan 1812
  5. Sarah Reeves, b. 26 Nov 1817
  6. Mary Reeves, b. bef 1821
  7. Lucinda Reeves, b. c1820
Each of the four daughters listed were identified as daughters of Joseph Reeves in their respective marriage records, either in Franklin or Shelby County. Both Merrit and Willis Reeves were adults when they married and no parent is listed; however, in the 1830 census of Franklin County, both are living in close proximity to each other as well as James Aines (sic Aynes) who was a witness at the wedding of Joseph Reeves and Lucy Aynes and probably her brother. Her mother Ann Aynes had signed a statement of consent with her mark which would indicate that Lucy's father was deceased and her widowed mother gave the consent.

Joseph appeared to be deceased by the time the 1830 census was taken because Merrit Reeves appeared to be head of the household which included his mother (female age 40-40) and four younger sisters as well as an older female 80-89 who was probably a grandmother. James Aynes brother of Lucy Aynes was living in the next residence. However, the 1840 census of Shelby County lists the 73 year old veteran Joseph Reeves in the household of son Willis Reeves. There is no other mention of Joseph Reeves after the 1840 census but he is listed on the Invalid War Pensioners rolls until 1863.

Joseph was a veteran of the War of 1812 and filed for a pension in 1834. According to his pension application file, he served as a private under a Capt. Funk in the Kentucky militia. Joseph Reeves is recorded on the pensioners roll from 1834 when he filed for a pension until 1863 when, presumably, he died.
