Narrative

William REEVES is the seventh known child and fourth son of Edward Reeves and his wife Fanny (nee CROOK). His birth was registered during the third quarter of 1869 in the Southampton Registration District and the GRO Index to Births confirms his mother's maiden name was Crook. He was baptised on 28 November 1869 at the Parish Church of St Mary, Southampton, Hampshire.

The death of his mother was recorded during the first quarter of 1870 and on the 1871 census William, along with his three brothers, appears in the St Mary's Union Poor House. He was just 1 year old and his place of birth is recorded as being Southampton. His widowed father Edward and sister Ann were living at 22 Longcroft Street in the St Mary's district of Southampton.

At the time of the 1881 census, William REEVES appears in his widowed father Edward's household at 23 Longcroft Street. He is now 11 years old, and again claims birth in Southampton. He is a Scholar.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of William REEVES and Harriett HICKMAN during the fourth quarter of 1889 in Southampton Registration District.
There are no known child from this marriage.

On the 1891 census, William REEVES and his wife Harriett are living at 6 Victoria Street in the Northam area of Southampton. William is now 21 years old, claims birth in Southampton and is working as a Carter. His wife Harriett is a year older and was also born in Southampton.

By the time of the 1901 William and Harriett have moved to 21 Longcroft Street in the nearby St Mary's area of Southampton. His age and place of birth are consistent with the previous census and he is now working as a General Labourer. His wife Harriett is also 31 years of age and claims birth in Southampton. Two boarders (no known relationship) complete the household.

On the 1911 census William appears in the household of his brother Edward REEVES at 32 Melbourne Street in the St Mary area of Southampton. Edward notes his brother is 41 years old, that he is married and that he was born in Southampton, Hampshire. William is working as a Carter and Coal Porter for the Gas Company. William's wife Harriett has yet to be identified on the 1911 census.

On the 1921 census William REEVES is one of four boarders in the Boarding House run my Jane CARBES (no known relationship) at 13 Nelson Street in the Chapel area of Southampton. His age is noted as being 51y 11m and he is married. He was born in Southampton, Hampshire and is working as a Boilermaker Labourer for J.I. Thornycroft Ship Builders and Repairs. William's wife Harriett has yet to be identified on the 1921 census.

It is probable that William is the individual who appears on the 1939 Register as a Patient in the West End Institution on the Botley Road in West End, Hampshire. His date of birth records only the year, 1869, and "Incapacitated" is noted in the Occupation column.

It is further probable, the William's death is that noted in FreeBMD during the second quarter of 1941 in the Winchester Registration District, which included the parishes of Botley & West End from the 1930's. This individual was 71 at death, so born around 1870; a reasonable match for our subject.

Research Notes

(1) William's wife Harriett REEVES (nee HICKMAN) has not been identified after the 1901 census. The most probable death registration for Harriet* Reev* after 1901 (based on her year of birth being between 1865 & 1873) would be during 1q1955 in Southampton Registration District. This individual was 86 years old, placing her birth around 1869; a very good match for William's wife Harriett REEVES.

But this does raise the question as to why she has yet to be identified after 1901. Perhaps she was then known by a different name/surname for a period of time .....
