Narrative

William, the son of William Rives and Jane (nee RIDDER) was baptised at the Parish Church of the St Mary, South Stoneham, Hampshire on 9 March 1806, at which time their surname is recorded as REEVES.

From successive census entries we know William's wife is called Sarah. It is not known when or where William and Sarah (mnu) were married.

Known children of William Reeves and Sarah (nee mnu)
  1. William Henry Reeves, bapt October 1830 at South Stoneham
  2. Thomas Reeves, bapt March 1832 at South Stoneham
  3. Mary Ann Reeves, bapt September 1833 at Hamble Le Rice
  4. Ann Maria Reeves, bapt November 1834 at Bursledon, but noted as being "of Titchfield"
  5. James Reeves, bapt May 1836 at Titchfield
  6. Sarah Reeves, bapt April 1838 at Titchfield
  7. Edmund Reeves, bapt February 1840 at Sarisbury
  8. George Reeves, bapt November 1845 at Woolston
On the 1841 census, with their surname recorded as Reaves (sic), William, Sarah and six children are living at Crofton, in the Parish of Titchfield Hampshire.
Rather than simple descending date sequence as is normal, their children are listed in the following sequence
Mary age 7, Maria (6), James (5), Thomas (8), Sarah (4) and finally Edmund (2)

At the time of the 1851 census, William is living in West End with his wife Sarah plus seven children and he is working as an Agricultural Labourer. He is 44 years old and claims birth in South Stoneham.

On the night of the 1861 census, William (and his son James) were absent from the family home. Sarah is the first listed member of the household but she is not entered as the head. She is described as married and her occupation is given as a Shepherd's wife. The census enumerator has thoughtfully noted on the bottom margin some details for William (Head, age 54 Shepherd) and James. The place is Fareham Common, Fontleigh in the Parish of St Peter, Fareham; probably modern day Funtley.

On the 1871 census, William, Sarah and their son James are living at 7 Lower Quay, Fareham. He is 64 years old and still employed as a shepherd and claiming birth in South Stoneham.

By the time of the 1881 census William has become a widower. His son James is still living with him and they are now living at 143 Westbury Court, West Street, Fareham. William is now aged 73.

William has not, as yet, been found on the 1891 census. His son James is now lodging with his married sister Mary Ann Churcher (nee Reeves) and her husband Aaron, in Fareham. It is probable William's is the death registered in the September quarter of 1881 in Fareham Registration District, age 73.
