The birth of William Henry REEVES was registered during the first quarter of 1859 in the South Stoneham Registration District. His mother's maiden name was recorded as "--". (See Research Note 1 below).

It is probable he is the William REEVES who appears on the 1861 census in the South Stoneham Union Workhouse. This individual is 2 years of age and was born in South Stoneham.

He has yet to be identified on later census returns and further research is needed.

Research Notes

(1) The FreeBMD Index shows four individuals named William Henry REEVES whose birth was registered in the southern part of Hampshire in the 18 month period 4q1857 through 1q1859. Prior to the availability of the GRO Index to Births it was impossible to differentiate them via the index alone. The inclusion of the mother's maiden name in the GRO Index makes it possible.

(2) On the 1861 census our subject is most probably the William Reeves who appears in the South Stoneham Union Workhouse. On the previous line is an entry for Maria Reeves, who is 25 years of age, is unmarried and was born in South Stoneham. Unlike most census pages, the pages for institutions do not include a column in which the relationship is recorded. But it is highly probable this Maria is William's unmarried mother. Based on her age, it is possible she is Ann Maria Reeves, the daughter of William Reeves who both appear on the 1851 census in South Stoneham. Further work is needed to prove these relationships.
